This movie starts off looking rather interesting. It soon gets plain bizarre. One out of every four scenes features the main character having sex, usually in a violent manner. That in itself is not a problem, but it simply gets annoying after a while. I mean what audience is this movie targeting after all - 12 year olds? I also found the main character to be rather unrealistic. I was left with the impression that Italy was simply a sex toy for him, even later on when he confessed he loved her. The film never really made a decent point about what he found in her.

this is primitive absolution fantasy reasoning. the drama of the story never actually forces the surgeon to transform-- or confront himself. everything happens to him, so his pure narcissicm (and the audience's) is never disturbed. his daughter survives so he can put away the bad memory of his crime, and go on and do whatever he wants. (maybe next time he'll rape his own daughter), but surely he'll be absolved for that too). The opening sequence in the rain, shot from a great height (I'd say that's the same technique of the opening scene in Vanilla Sky), is stunning ... and from there on, the movie flows easily, always vividly and painfully alive, with no lazy moment, at no slow pace, even though it mainly relies upon a subtle psychological analysis of the characters, with those glances, those conversations, those all-important small gestures, those confrontations, those deep feelings in display ... Soffermiamoci poi un attimo su questo " stupro". Spunta un po' dal nulla, perché nulla (né il carattere né il passato né il presente del medico) prepara il lettore a questo evento inspiegabile e, anzi, il protagonista stesso sembra crederci poco (non una domanda, non un'analisi sull'accaduto, non un dubbio, non un rimorso… insomma, stiamo parlando di un libro in prima persona che segue il punto di vista e, di conseguenza l'introspezione, del protagonista; e, quindi, dimmi qualcosa dannazione! Hai appena commesso un atto ignobile: sei contento? Sei triste? Ti senti una m***?). Alcuni dialoghi non li ho capiti: è un po' come se i due interlocutori fossero su due frequenze diverse e uno rispondesse alla domanda di un'altra voce udita nell'etere, invece che a quella dell'interlocutore che ha di fronte. the love story is with a girl who is presented as a cheap tramp. she appears to be a prostitute, and the surgeon (who is presented as living a passionless life) follows her home and rapes her. inexplicably, she falls in love with him, and we find out that, far from being a prostitute, actually she's an angelic immigrant who cleans up hotel rooms (i.e. other people's messy lives; i.e. she's a saint). Per poi arrivare, ma da qui in avanti mi taccio perché ho deciso di prendere baracca e burattini e salutare la mia lettura, dell'aborto di Italia. Anche qui vedi sopra: tema importante su cui davvero ci si sarebbe potuto sperticare in qualunque tipo di ragionamento, e invece… solito piattume sentimentale, solite frasi fatte da cioccolatini, solite considerazioni banali (e, di conseguenza, irritanti).
