Warning: This will kill your previous highlights if you don’t dilute it with Contrast Medium (at least 4:1). It’s easier to get a solid edge highlight with the Citadel paint, whereas if I wanted the same level of opacity with the Two Thin Coats paints, I’d need to edge highlight everything (you guessed it) twice. Within those 60 paints are 6 matt-finish washes and 6 metallic paints – 3 golds and 3 silvers (though one of the golds is a colour match to Citadel’s Balthazar Gold which is quite bronzy in colour). The other 48 colours are a mix of primary and secondary colours, all of which have been designed to be used as base layers and highlights with each other in the form of “triads” of ascending colour. Fortunately, I have this recipe damn near memorized, as I have reproduced it over several thousands of points worth of tiny crusading weirdos. With the template set for the central figure, the only challenges here would be the bevvy of details on the model and his attendant weirdos. Do you like gold? The Adeptus Custodes are the Emperor’s personal bodyguard and his greatest warriors. Each Custodian is a demigod in golden armor, wielding the Imperium’s most finely-wrought weapons, surpassing even the Space Marines in martial prowess and tactical acumen. Simply put: These guys are the best, of the best (of the best). Don’t let Space Marine or Grey Knight players tell you different! In the year 977.M41, the Daemon M'kar trapped Mephiston in the crystal caves of Solon V. He then attempted to lure Mephiston into joining Chaos as a renegade, claiming that Mephiston was already firmly on the path to Daemonhood. Mephiston rejected his captor's claims and throttled the life out of M'kar [3]. The Ymyr Conglomerate was the natural fit for me, because it’s the red one. I approached this very similarly to how I approach my Blood Angels and Sisters of Battle, by starting from a Mephiston Red prime – if most of the model is going to be red, it may as well start that way! Let me tell you, after reading Joey’s comprehensive method above I feel like I have a tough act to follow. If you’re not quite on his level and wanting a simpler Mephiston which is closer to the box art version, here’s mine, which involved a lot fewer layers and a lot more Contrast.Carefully wash Druchii Violet into recesses between armor plates, undersides of filigree, and anywhere else that needs contrast.
