About this deal

The first quarter of 2023 has been a busy one for Cognac brands. From Hennessy’s partnership with Grammy award-winner Alicia Keys to Bacardi’s multi-billion-dollar investment in rapper Jay-Z’s D’Ussé Cognac, the category has been active. VSOP stands for “Very Superior Old Pale”: VSOP cognacs are created from eaux-de-vie aged for at least four years. The VSOP category includes designations such as “Old” or “Reserve”. Brandy and cognac are truly a connoisseur's choice when it comes to distilled spirits. Their smooth, warming character makes them excellent for sipping after meals, while VSOP (very superior old pale) is best served as an apéritif. Or you can give a proper end to your dinner with a glass of calvados. Sweet and fruity, this apple brandy pairs well with rich desserts like chocolate cake and tiramisu.

Martell is known for its elegance and tradition. Martell cognac was served at the gala dinner to celebrate the marriage of Prince Rainier of Monaco to the US actress Grace Kelly, and was even given as a gift to Queen Elizabeth II on her first visit to France! Brandy vs. Cognac: What’s the difference? The VS – Single Cru flight delivered a Gold medallist in the form of Courvoisier Cognac VS. Chambers found notes of “caramel and treacle” on the nose, followed by “pepper, raisins and woody spice” on the palate. VS, VSOP and XO refer to the age and quality of the cognac. Each corresponds to how long the brandy has been aged in oak barrels. In 1983, following a request by the BNIC (Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac)*, the French government drafted regulations governing the terms used to describe a cognacs’ quality. These designations, which may be included on the label, refer to the age of the youngest eau-de-vie used in making the cognac.

Martel cognac is made from a very specific type of white wine, which is made from grapes grown in the town of Cognac, France. The wine must be distilled in copper stills (used to heat the wine to the perfect temperature) twice and aged for a minimum of two years before being turned into cognac. The oldest of the great cognac houses, founded by Jean Martell in 1715, Maison Martell is renowned throughout the world for the finesse and elegance of its cognacs, the result of a legacy of savoir-faire handed down through nine generations. Together with a passion for its craft and a profound attachment to the terroir, Maison Martell is defined by the audacity with which it has pioneered new expressions – from the icon Martell Cordon Bleu in 1912 to the trailblazing Martell Blue Swift today. A bottle of Martell Cordon Bleu can be seen in the opening scene of Apocalypse Now (1979), on the bedside table of Captain Willard (played by Martin Sheen). Medals went to: “juicy, fudgy” Coutanseaux Aîné XO – Grande Champagne; “juicy and fresh” Coutanseaux Aîné XXO; and “lush” Cognac Frapin Cigar Blend XO. By this logic, VS bottles of cognac tend to be a lighter amber when poured. XO bottles of cognac are very dark and smooth. This applies to all cognac producers, not just Martell. Martell specifically uses fine-grain oak wood, which gives their cognac a delicate woody flavor.

VS stands for “Very Special”: only eaux-de-vie at least two years old can be used to make a VS cognac. Other denominators and expressions are permitted, such as “3 stars” or “luxury”, and as such are included in the VS cognac category.

Greenhouse, Steven (1987-12-17). "Seagram Makes an Offer for Martell". The New York Times. ISSN 0362-4331 . Retrieved 2022-03-24. Since 1715, Maison Martell has perpetuated an uncompromising savoir-faire defined by the decision to age its eaux-de-vie exclusively in barrels of fine-grained oak. Martell VSOP is the result of an uncompromising savoir-faire, which is defined by ageing eaux-de-vie exclusively in barrels of fine-grained oak. On the palate it continues to impress, with sensual yellow fruits coming to the fore, combining power and delicacy in just the right measures. How to enjoy the Martell VSOP Aged in Red Barrels The Martell VSOP Red Barrel Cognac is a real treat and offers extraordinary value for money. It takes the taster on a wonderful sensory journey, right from the moment you first lay eyes on it.In the VSOP – Single Cru round, another Master was scooped up by Cognac Frapin VSOP. Bates said: “Fantastic nose delivering warm, rich fruit and soft elegant spice. Elegant, refined and nice fruitiness.” Martell cognac is available in different types, mostly differing from each other with age, such as the VS, VSOP, and XO. The VS is made from the least aged eaux-de-vie while VSOP has four years of age in the least and the XO, at least ten years old. The flavors in each differ where the VS category offers more fresh and fruity flavors. You will find stewed fruits and jam aromas in VSOP category and flowery and spicy aromas in the XO category of Cognacs. XO stands for “Extra Old”: XO cognacs are made only from eaux-de-vie at least ten years old. Cognacs such as “Napoleon” or “Old Reserve” are equivalent to XO cognac.
