About this deal

In the 1990’s the difficulty to run two screens was a major problem. Gaumont, who had operated the Pagode since 1979 decided to quit, and a new owner of the building intended to open a restaurant, but the Ministry of Culture decided to upgrade the Landmark status of the building together with its garden, with the obligation for it to remain a cinema. After two years dark again La Pagode reopened, the exterior towers of the roof are covered with plastic sheets to avoid leaks and scaffolding was erected in the main auditorium to hold the highly decorative ceiling which is covered with plastic sheeting. Major works of renovation are needed but the future is more secure and I hope this renovation will be possible. This is one of the more interesting movie theatres in Paris. This extraordinary era in La Pagode’s history continued until 1927 when the hosts could no longer carry on. The property was put up for sale. However, due to the unusual architecture, offers were not pouring in. For a few years La Pagode languished idly… until… a Chinese diplomatic delegation showed up. They were in search of a building for their embassy. They thought La Pagode’s architecture was perfectly suitable. Everything was going smoothly until the diplomats decided to have a closer inspection of the building. They didn’t like what they saw and promptly terminated the lease.

La Pagode looks sad and forlorn these days. More than three years have passed since its closure. It seems like we’ve seen this movie before. But La Pagode is a mythical place and seems to have a mysterious hand guiding its destiny because… From then on Amandine plunges into organizing lavish banquets, balls, thematic evenings, concerts, and plays. One after the other. La Pagode becomes the focal point of Paris’ upper class, crazy social life and Amandine reigns over these extravaganzas dressed in elaborate Japanese costume as Empress of the Rising Sun. The conquest of Saigon in 1859 by Admiral Rigault de Genouilly and the ensuing spread of French influence through Indochina and Cambodia was the first colonial success of the Second Empire. To commemorate the achievement the admiral, having become minister of the Navy, presented Empress Eugénie in 1867 with this luxuriously bound album of photographs entitled "Cochinchine et Cambodge." Comprising twenty-six images of Indochina and twenty-one of Cambodia, the album includes fifteen views of the ruins of Angkor. The photographs were made by M. Gsell, a Frenchman stationed in Saigon, of whom nothing more is yet known except that in June 1866 he accompanied the naval captain Doudart de Lagrée on a scientific mission along the Mekong River. The mission began with a photographic survey of Angkor. Cohen, in his words, is a “born cinéphile” and has been since the age of 14. Parallel to his real estate business he produces and distributes independent and arthouse films throughout North America. His Cohen Media Group is today the largest American distributor of French films in the U.S. Besides producing films he is sometimes a director. His first attempt at that was at 16 and his film won a Kodak prize. Some of the films his company has produced received Academy Award nominations or awards. One is the 2017 Academy Award winning film, The Salesman, for Best Foreign Language Film. His accomplishments are too numerous to list in a few words.

This architectural gem is easy to find, near the Parc Monceau in one direction, and the Musée Jacquemart-Andre in the other, and only a little more than a 10 minute walk from the Champs Élysées.

Poor Monsieur Morin. He not only loses his beloved Amandine to a much younger man but he happens to be the son of his co-director at Le Bon Marché, Jules Plassard. Quelle humiliation! Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special. The Bois de Vincennes – a ‘green lung’ in the eastern section of Paris– is a great place for a leisurely cycle ride. Starting from the Porte Dorée (metro line 8, tram 3a), one of the 17 gateways built into the 19th-century Thiers wall, you will come to a 995-hectare expanse of woodland. The Bois was a royal hunting ground until the Revolution and subsequently used for other purposes, such as an artillery academy, before being developed, in the late 19th century, into the largest public park in Paris.

operated La Pagode for 15 years bringing the attendance to over 100,000 per year. Cinema-oriented events enhanced the cinephile experience. A few years ago the relationship between the owner and the management company began to sour and continued to deteriorate from tense to caustic. A Tibetan Buddhist temple named Kagyu-Dzong was built in the 1980s in front of the Pagode which offers many activities with a variety of French and Asian teachers. Thus, people can learn the basics of Buddhism and meditation, participate in a yoga session or take a Japanese calligraphy class, or perhaps a Tibetan language lesson. A tour of Buddhist art at the Pagode du Vincennes.

It was converted into the Pagode, a 400-seat cinema opening on 31st March 1931 with Jose Crespo in “En cada puerto un amor” (One Mad Kiss) presented in its Spanish version. A projection booth was built at the rear side of the building and beautiful glass windows on the side-walls were darkened by simple wood panels. An additional building constructed on a part of the garden was used as the lobby. It was a venue for both the 1900 Summer Olympics and the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, of which a vestige remains at the starting point of this route: a bronze statue of Athena, personifying France bringing peace and prosperity to her colonies. Woodland, lakes, a tropical garden, a working farm, a zoo and theatres … the Bois de Vincennes has much to offer! The second article will tell the tale of the Pagoda Paris (or the Red Pagoda), an imposing, Chinese-style pagoda located in the upper-class 8th arrondissement.
