About this deal

To conclude, these are fine pencils, especially if you are on a budget. But with so many options on the market, I would look to other economical brands that are a bit softer and more vibrant, such as Prismacolor Premiers. But these would be great colored pencils for a student, older child, or someone looking for high-quality pencils for adult coloring books. The sets are quite large so you will have a lot of colors to choose from. This is particularly true in brighter colors such as yellows and purples. There is also an abundant supply of specialty colors such as Easter greens and pinks. While we don’t find a need for many of these colors in a typical art piece, they may be perfect for you. These pencils were delivered in a very timely manner. They are wonderful pencils. Buttery vibrant colors was so excited to draw my next drawing with them. Just a joy to work with The color selection is vast as the sets are quite large so most people should find the colors that they need. They are very expensive, however, so they may be out of some people’s colored pencil budgets. They come with a round barrel, have a 3.8 mm core, and are available in sets of 100 and 150. Visual Appeal – 4/5

Not a hard, crumbly, brittle pencil, but something oil based and stiffer. The firmer the pencil, the more control you’ll get from it. I use a lot of coloured pencils in my work. For me, the characteristics of a high quality pencil have a soft and buttery feel with a vibrant and even placement of colour. Holbein uses high grade pigments which exhibit little fading or discolouration by light. Holbein tend to shed core debris as you use them. Use glassine paper below your hand and dust the paper frequently to keep the margins clean. IMPORTANT: If you’re someone who can’t stand to sharpen pencils because you hate wasting pencil lead— DO NOT BUY HOLBEIN PENCILS! I have never blown through this much pencil length with any other brand. These pencils disappear fast! Holbein makes 6 warm and 6 cool grays. All are helpfully marked as Gray 1-6 with 1 being the lightest and 6 the darkest. It’s wonderfully logical. Some of the colors were a bit softer than others, and those softer colors usually had the most intense pigmentation. Others were a bit harder and that resulted in a lighter application. Holbein come pre-sharpened… kinda. They’re sharpened to a shallow point but not enough to actually put a real point on the end— the tippy-tip is quite flat which makes the sharpening is completely useless. Be prepared to spend time sharpening the entire set before coloring. They make a complete range of pinks and magentas plus a beautiful selection of reds with no overlaps or missing values.

Holbein can be sharpened to a long fine point but be prepared for a little bit at the tip to fall off with the first strokes. The Holbein Pencils blend well with each other, and you can achieve different tones and colours by layering. The buttery lead allows them to mix quite well on the paper even without the blender. They go over other materials well, Gouache (when dry), Viarco ArtGraf Drawing Putty and watercolour brush pens as part of a mixed media approach. And even soft colored pencil people often add a few firm pencils to their projects. I may color the leaf with soft Derwent Lightfast pencils but then add fine veins with a firm Caran d’Ache Pablo. And I frequently use Pablos to crisp up the edge of something that’s looking mushy in Prismacolor. A super-sharp tip will break under pressure, but overall I found that these pencils kept a good point and would provide a lot of coverage before needing to be sharpened. There were no issues with lead breakage during sharpening. In comparing to the similar Caran D’Ache Luminance, (which developed lots of crumbs under heavy pressure,)the Lightfast had a cleaner lay down. But it still was not as smooth as a soft wax-based pencil such as the Derwent Coloursoft or Prismacolor Premier.

Holbein Origins

And fat? Fat is oil. Fat tends to mean an animal by-product but folks, so is petrolium. Crude oil is really, really, really old fat. Holbein Greens are the best I’ve ever seen. Greens are why I initially wanted Holbeins! There’s a full selection of values in several green families— olive, chartreuse, kelly, sage, viridian, and turquoise… they cover every color of green I’ve ever wanted. Current safety standards err on the side of caution to the point of stupidity. We don’t eat art supplies but the law assumes we might.

Holbein offers 2 whites, one “White” and one “Soft White”. Soft white does not mean beige. The Soft White core is physically softer and soapier in feel, similar to Derwent’s Chinese White Drawing Pencil. Holbein white is dense with a hint of translucency like Prismacolor White. I strongly recommend all four white pencils mentioned in this paragraph. The Meltz Pencil Blender is a water based, therefore non flammable blending thinner. It’s quite a small bottle at 35 ml, but it seems a little goes a long way and it’s also small enough to take on location drawing. It doesn’t have a smell to it which is great because I don’t like to use anything that might be toxic in my small studio space. It does come in a plastic bottle which is a shame, although I’m sure it can be recycled. In use, I did experiencing one lead breaking a few times, but this is to be expected with softer leads. And with heavy application, the dreaded wax bloom can develop. I also noticed that some pencils felt a bit harder than others, so there is some variation within this line.So to say “wax, fats, and oils” is like saying “here’s my bike, bicycle, and my thingamabob with two wheels which I pedal around town.” In addition, there are plans to sell iPad and MacBook case handmade from material representative of the Nishijin-ori used to make Japanese kimonos. These pencils are easy to layer, have a good color palette, and really just give you everything you need in a colored pencil. I could see how these could become my go-to studio pencils, but I would want to do my own lightfastness tests to determine which colors were best for final drawings. It would be great to see Faber-Castell embrace the latest Lightfastness standards (now about 15 years old) and provide testing results on their pencils such as the info provided by Derwent, Caran D’Ache, and Prismacolor.

Holbein pigment tends to sit high on the surface of the paper and it doesn’t seem to settle and sink into the tooth the way Prismacolor, Lightfast, and Luminance do. Because of this, it’s essential that you seal your Holbein work with good quality fixative when you’re finished. This set contains the following colours: Pink, Salmon Pink, Cream, Naples Yellow, Lettuce Green, Cobalt Green, Ice Green, Sky Blue, Lavender Blue, Rose Pink, Wisteria, Mauve. Holbeins are a soft-core pencil and the exposed core will break off if you drop the pencil onto a hard floor. The Holbein Artist Colored pencils attempt to stand out in the competitive premium-priced colored pencil category by providing interesting cores and huge color selections. We really could tell the difference that the wax/oil hybrid core brings to the table. By capturing the best of oils and the best of waxes, you can take your art game to the next level.

Lightfastness for the Polychromos is rated on a 3 star scale by the manufacturer: 100 colors have the best 3 star rating and 20 have a 2 star rating. What this means in terms of lightfastness by the latest standards is unclear, but there is no doubt that this is the pencil that many artists swear by and are comfortable using.
