About this deal

When you have all colour swatches done you know how each paint works. Some have more pigment, some are more opaque and of course: the colour are quite different from the colour on the tubes. Firstly, the texture of the paints was very smooth and fluid, thinner in consistency than the buttery, heavy body acrylics. This made them very easy to use undiluted but I was concerned that this would mean that they wouldn’t be as opaque as I would like. I was pleasantly surprised that when not thinned down with water, they were very opaque, which really opens up possibilities when painting, such as adding highlights and details towards the end. You can see from my test that the white and yellow were slightly less opaque but a further layer of paint would sort that out.

I also tried an application of matt spray varnish over the top and that sealed everything permanently. I used 2 thin coats of Golden MSA spray varnish matt to keep the matt surface finish. Traditional gouache is opaque, matte watercolour – so like watercolour it is re-soluble, not water resistant.Metallic Colours: A series of metallic shades which are slightly more translucent than the regular colours, giving a sense of luminance and depth to your painting.

Holbein Acrylic Gouache does not have the same fragile surface as traditional gouache made with Gum Arabic because the acrylic paint film is more flexible. It can be mixed with other acrylic or traditional gouaches, as well as with watercolours. After almost five hours (divided over three days, mind you) I painted all 102 colour swatches. This sounds like a lot of work. Correction: this is a lot of work. But it’s worth it, trust me. I waited 4 days to be sure the test was dry and then rubbed a wet brush over the stripes to see if I could disturb them. Color Wheel Rubber Stamp for Watercolor Pie Chart, Ink, Acrylic, etc. Organize Your Mixing Recipes and Monochromatic Studies (Select Mounting Option) Relatively reactivatable: Even though once completely dry you won’t be able to rework acryla but while it is still drying, you have a chance.Japanesque Colours: This selection of beautiful, sophisticated tones are formulated with fine powders which give them a unique slightly gritty, textured matt finish. I applied each colour in 3 stripes that each had a different amount of water – 1. straight from the tube, 2. 1/4 water, 3. lots of water like a wash. Like I wrote earlier: once the Acryla Gouache has dried up on your palette it can not be reactivated. You might be used to that because watercolours and normal gouache can be used multiple times when dried up in a palette. So, I recommend using tiny bits of paint when creating something. The pigment in these paints are magnificent so you really don’t need a lot of paint to get a vibrant result. So, what do I think? Comparing acrylic gouache, traditional gouache and acrylic paint. Comparing acrylic paint, traditional gouache and acrylic gouache All in all, I’m really pleased with these paints and I am looking forward to make many more illustrations with them.

Some traditional (gum Arabic-based) gouaches add minerals like chalk to create a physical barrier to light refraction.Holbein Acrylic Gouache is an opaque and highly-pigmented acrylic paint which dries to a velvety-matte finish. The colours are very popular with designers and artists, who love their superb quality. These paints are not like regular gouache. It’s made by Holbein, an art materials company based in Japan. They only produce high-end art materials and no study level supplies, which is quite unique. What I noticed immediately is how vibrant the colours are. It’s almost surreal: I have never seen paints before with this kind of pigment. And I have tested a lot of paints!
