About this deal

The new commentary on the theatrical cut with screenwriter Daniel Farrands, actress Marianne Hagan, and moderator Michael Perez is quite good as it gets into the nitty gritty of the how and why of the film. Farrands primarily drives the commentary with Hagan joining in for emphasis. Perez occasionally interjects with questions and clarification. The animated still gallery contains 87 images of posters, promotional photos, behind-the-scenes photos, and memorabilia. A discussion of the Producer's Behind-the-Scenes Footage (24:04, SD) was captured by screenwriter Daniel Farrands during the first week of shooting. The Night She Came Home" (59:43, HD) is a fascinating overview of a 2013 horror convention in Indianapolis, where It was reported that there was a near 10-minute audio sync issue on the Blu-ray release of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, included in Anchor Bay and Scream Factorys epic Halloween collection.

Interestingly, the entire Halloween franchise has five distinct eras. The first three films make up the first era, the fourth and fifth film make up the second, the sixth, seventh, and eighth film make up the third, the two Rob Zombie films make up the fourth, and the three Blumhouse films make up the fifth. It’s almost like having a different volume devoted to a single subject sitting on your shelf. Some volumes are more entertaining than others, and it’s easy to ignore the rest. Die-hard fans will defend each and every film in the franchise to their dying breaths (even the recent films, which seemed to stir up far more controversy than any of the previous ones), but it’s clear that the Halloween franchise has outlived many of its peers at this point. After all, nobody is making any A Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th sequels or reboots, though they’ve tried in the past. Even so, there seems to be a constant appetite for Michael Myers that never really gets quenched, regardless of the quality of the films being released. s Halloween is an iconic movie, it catapulted the ‘slasher’ genre into the mainstream and set up a path for myriad copycats to follow. Of course, its success has seen a slew of sequels, reboots and remakes, 10 in total, all with varying degrees of success, some building on, others ignoring and others still building on those that ignore the previous lore from earlier films – one could count 4 distinct time lines. Instead, tonight’s feature ignores everything that has gone before, to be a standalone sequel to the original film, released 40 years later, and the result is sometimes great, sometimes contrived and sometimes silly, but always respectful.

LL Cool J ( NCIS: Los Angeles), Joseph Gordon-Levitt ( The Dark Knight Rises, Inception), Nancy Stephens ( Halloween) and Janet Leigh ( Psycho, The Fog) also star. The more time I’ve spent with this transfer the better it got. Especially flipping between 4K discs it became easier and easier to appreciate the small differences and overall improvements that steadily start to add up. It may not be the full bright bold orange tone of the 1999 DVD, but, this is a big step in the right direction. This 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray from Scream Factory is easily the best looking and the better color balanced transfer we’ve had for this film in the last 20 years. That 2003 Divimax DVD master really set this film on a tough course for the last few disc releases. This new transfer is a welcome middle ground, cool and autumnal but with more natural primary colors, skin tones, and more orange tones with robust details. Outside of John Carpenter actually getting involved and tweaking the thing himself, this is the best we’re likely to see for a while, and I’m pretty damn happy with the results. The Shape Of Things – A Look At Michael Myers’ Murders And Mayhem With Special Make-Up Effects Artists John Buechler And Brad Hardin And Actor George P.
