About this deal

This is the first audiobook I've listened to narrated by George Guidall and I loved his voice, he's a wonderful reader. I missed the sound of his voice when the book was over. I also missed hearing about what was going on in Martin Pistorius's life. He's an amazing person, I hope he lives happily ever after. Martin was moved to care centers for severely disabled children. The stress and heartache shook his parents’ marriage and their family to the core. Their boy was gone. Or so they thought. This was interesting it got you into the mystery behind it as you really wanted to solve it with the characters, needing to know exactly what it was that had happened all those years ago. After being introduced to the dead boy you start to get the answers which you get slowly as you read through the story. I was a little disappointed that there was no mention of what the doctors think caused his illness or how common or uncommon diseases like this are.

Pistorius believes that he began regaining consciousness around age 16 (around 1992), [ citation needed] during which time he was able to sense the people around him but did not immediately recall previous events, something he has described as "a bit like a baby being born". [10] Around age 19, Pistorius regained full consciousness and awareness, but was initially unable to impart this to the people around him. [ citation needed] He was capable of making small movements that were not initially detected by his primary caregivers. One day, Virna van der Walt—an aromatherapist and one of Pistorius's day carers—began noticing that Pistorius would react to specific statements and questions she made. [ citation needed] Upon her recommendations, Pistorius was sent to the Centre For Augmentative And Alternative Communication at the University of Pretoria around age 25. There, they confirmed that he was aware and could respond to statements. [ citation needed] Pistorius's parents gave him a computer with software to communicate with the people around him. [ citation needed] Personal life [ edit ] This book should be mandatory reading for police. Including empathy training. There should be a required aspect to the psychological testing that includes this. Period. Despite this, Ghost Boys isn't perfect, but it is definitely a book that most middle graders need to read.

This is a perfect October book for kids who like stories that are eerie but not terrifying. Set in a small Texas town, the story is about kids who solve a 30-year-old missing persons case while setting the soul of the ghost boy, Ben, free. Along the way, there are plenty of things to hold your interest...a closed silver mine, threatening anonymous messages, secret panels, a hidden journal, and a monster storm. Ugh, how does one rate an autobiography of someone who went through SO MUCH and triumphed? I'm going to go with 4.5 stars, rounded down to 4, because I didn't love it enough to make it a keeper and re-read it. Pistorius lived the nightmare for over a decade - in a wheelchair, at the mercy of caregivers, and spending hours of every day just staring at the wall. This man and his lady are an inspiration to us all. And it is an important lesson for all. Just because a person can't speak or control the movements of their body doesn't mean they are dumb or aren't there. They can hear, think and feel. We may never know to what extent, but NEVER treat ANYone, no matter what they look like or their disability, as less than yourself. So important for some people to learn. Jerome feels bad that Sarah is inside on such a beautiful day. He tries to encourage her to not let this whole thing consume her. Alright, fine so far. Sarah explodes furious at her father for doing what he did, saying she hates him. That’s when Jerome - THE MURDERED TWELVE YEAR OLD VICTIM - tells her that her Dad just ‘made a mistake’. He says that he was just following in the footsteps of those that came before him. He wasn’t taught any better and that Sarah has the chance now to do some good by showing him how to be better.

Have you ever seen one of those movies where someone wakes up as a ghost but doesn't even know they've died? However much I tried to beg and plead, shout and scream, I couldn't make them notice me. I was invisible. The ghost boy." Another, my great-grandfather emigrated to America in the early 1900s. Felt had to ‘Americanize’ his name. Disconnect from his heritage to be American enough. Robing descendants of their heritage until recently, in the name of colonialism. Or, the orphans I’d read about in China. Vietnamese children born from GI’s and locals brutalized. The days of children born disabled were cast away in hospitals in American institutions until changes were made in the 70s. Then, in 1998, when Martin was twenty-three years old, an aromatherapy masseuse began treating him and sensed some part of him was alert. Experts were dismissive, but his parents persevered and soon realised their son was as intelligent as he'd always been. With no memory of the time before his illness, Martin was a man-child reborn in a world he didn't know. He was still in a wheelchair and unable to speak, but he was brilliantly adept at computer technology. Since then, and against all odds, he has fallen in love, married and set up a design business which he runs from his home in Essex." The author fell into a vegetative state at age 12 and started to come round at 16, but it was not until he was 19 and a carer realised that he was conscious and listening to her that tests and eventually communication devices made a return to a relatively normal life possible. The author is still in a wheelchair and still uses a computer to speak, but he is married and works at a high level in computers.

Reminiscent of The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold while living in the town the book partially took place. Having no idea at the time until hearing the name in Pennsylvania. In 2011, Simon & Schuster published Pistorius's autobiography, Ghost Boy, which he co-wrote with Megan Lloyd Davies. [13] [14] [15] The book met with a favourable response. [16] [17] [18] By 2011, Pistorius had regained some control over his head and arms and could communicate with others via a computer equipped with text-to-speech software. In February 2022, Ghost Boys was translated into Persian for sale in Iran.
