The other negative is that there’s less underfoot support if you like to shift around on your pedals while standing. This wasn’t an issue for me, but Crankbrothers says that even half the xc racers who use its pedals would choose the small-platformed Candy pedals over the Eggbeater for that reason. You might also appreciate a little extra platform if you use softer shoes. Personally, I don’t require all that much float, almost none really. I prefer to be snug in the pedal for more efficient power transfer and control. How about cost? Are Eggbeater pedals more expensive than other brands? You may also like to run the pedals on your road / commuter bike. Buy a set of Quattro cleats (CRB-15289) to use on your road shoes. It makes pulling off from junctions a breeze as you have 4 points of entry to the pedals.

When these pedals first came out there was some concern about durability. I’m pretty sure Crank Brothers has resolved any major issues. My Eggbeaters have performed superbly. These pedals are very durable, and you will be able to use them for up to five, or even seven thousand kilometers before requiring maintenance, but they are a little heavy, and in situations where extreme mud-shedding is desirable, these pedals fall a little short. Most European cyclists use Shimano. For me personally, I like having SPD on my mountain bike but do not like them for cross-cycling. That said, you might find that they are just what you are looking for. PROS To my knowledge, no manufacturer makes flat pedals for cyclocross, but even so, some riders prefer platform pedals when it comes to CX racing. Depending on what way round the cleats are fitted to your shoes, you can choose between 15° and 20° release angles.
