About this deal

One final half gripe – there’s no internal pinpointer so you may find you’re digging bigger holes than necessary. However, for the price, you can’t expect everything! The metal detector has a fully waterproof search coil. This allows you to search in shallow water sources such as rivers, ponds, creeks, lakes and seas. It will be able to suggest whether the find contains traces of iron, silver or gold (bear in mind that not all metal detectors can identify gold as they need to operate at a very low frequency, which not all detectors can do). The great thing is that, in addition to the metal detector, you also get a premium headphone, a heavy-duty digger shovel, and a multi-purpose carrying bag. If you’re after an excellent metal detector that won’t break the bank the Garrett ACE 250 is worth consideration. It’s a step up from Garrett’s entry-level ACE 150 with extra search functions and more technology.

It’s more of a ‘toy’ detector compared to many of the others models featured on this list. Although it has enough power to detect metals close to the surface of the ground, it’s not got the strength to uncover much buried treasure. However, it performs as you would expect for the price.

There are many ways that it differs from a standard metal detector, and it has less functions overall. For example, there’s no way to eliminate certain metals from the search (therefore, it will likely detect a lot of non-valuable iron, bottlecaps etc.). Very basic metal detectors for kids have a singular on/off switch. These are the cheapest models available and will be most appropriate for 4 – 9-year-olds. As children get older, they will be able to better understand a metal detector with adjustable settings. Look out for information about whether the coil of the metal detector is waterproof. If it’s not, you might be better off looking for a different model. As with most other metal detectors, this model can intelligently distinguish between metal types, removing low-value metals from its search if calibrated to do so. This feature saves time when it comes to detecting and excavating because it becomes clear when something is worth digging up. Most likely, you’ll want to select a metal detector based on the age of your child. The following is good guidance to bear in mind, but of course – you know your child best!

With a relatively accurate pinpoint feature, object location is also easy to specify. By pressing the ‘pinpoint’ button, you can narrow down the exact position of the find. The ACE 250 weighs 1.2 kg and is so well balanced it can be used for hours. Its weight is mostly in the control box at its handle, and the telescopic pole is easily adjustable to suit your height and ability to stretch. In this case you’ll need to look for a more expensive unit, like the Garrett AT Pro Metal Detector. This metal detector has gold-finding capabilities which not all possess. The reason that gold detecting metal detectors are more expensive is because they require more power. Very low frequency metal detectors are arguably the most commonly used type of metal detector. Also known as induction balance detectors, these types of detector utilise two coils.

With just three buttons on its control unit, and an easy-to-read LED display, the DR.OTEK Metal Detector keeps things simple. There’s an on/off button, pinpoint button, and sensitivity button. The machine I received came as part of a kit along with a small shovel, finds bag and wired headphones. As they get more adept at using the detector, they’ll be able to appreciate that differently pitched ‘beeps’ indicate different metals (discerning between iron, mid-range metals, and silver). One of the best features is Garrett’s top-of-the-range 6.5 x 9-inch PROformance coil that’s powerful enough to detect 15-20 cm into soil and waterproof for shallow freshwater searches too. You won’t need to upgrade this coil in a rush. If you want to get started in metal detecting and want a good quality machine at a budget price, the MTXE is worth considering.

Most kids study history at school, and metal detecting is a great way to keep them engaged and interested – potentially leading to better grades! Metal detecting can help kids learn about history, geography and even biology. You and your child will likely enjoy spending time researching any old relics that you find.

DR.OTEK Easy to Operate Metal Detector for Kids

If you want to get your children into metal detecting, the DR. OTEK Pinpoint Metal Detectoris a great introductory tool. It’s suitable for ages 10 + and is a great way to ignite interest in the hobby.

DR.ÖTEK also produce another machine called the MT-XR. This machine is promoted as their top-of-the-line detector but I would disagree. The MTXE is, in my opinion, a better machine. The pinpointer probe part has a scraper blade on one side and there are also depth markings on the probe itself. Performance:

National Geographic Junior Metal Detector

With just three buttons on its control unit, the Dr.OTEK Metal Detector keeps things pleasantly simple – there is a power button, sensitivity button, and pinpoint button. The pinpoint button hones in on the exact location of the find, making it easier to locate when digging. WIDE SEARCH COIL is so powerful it can locate a quarter coin up to 10" underground. This waterproof metal detector can find larger objects at even greater depths. The coil is IP68 waterproof and works well in shallow water.
