About this deal

Having bashed my head against the wall trying to get Portsmouth City Council to understand how to use speed limit signs before, I wasn't going to bother. Instead one day I decided to tweet Hampshire Police, apologising for wasting their time with pedantry, but explaining that if I could spot the problem then a lawyer could too. Despite my informal choice of channel, the offending sign was gone two days later, with a reply thanking me. Are we nearly there yet? Sometimes, you just need a break from driving. When you’re bored, tired, hungry, or have passengers who are any/all of the above, you need to find the nearest service station. Thankfully, they’re well signposted on UK motorways, in the same distinctive blue as other motorway signs. A blue-coloured yards sign with white bars: These yards signs are seen when you are nearing the exit of a motorway or upon closing distance with a motorway junction.

New symbol for use on direction signs, to indicate locations where motorhomes and campervans can be serviced (water, toilet etc). Amendments to existing signs Additional warning sign legends * First up, let’s break it down to what the different shapes and colours of road signs mean. Generally, road signs will fit into these three common shapes. Triangle road signsOthers are placed on gantries—bridge-like structures—above the road. These ones often tell you if you need to be in a certain lane for a specific destination. For example, if a lane is going to merge into an exit road, there would be a sign to tell drivers that the left lane is only for traffic destined for the next junction. It would direct vehicles heading to other places to move into one of the right-hand lanes. Keeping an eye on direction signs helps avoid dangerous lane-switching near junctions, and reduces the build-up of traffic around certain routes. Motorway junction signs The result is that these signs here are giving a countdown to something, without saying what the something is in a situation that is not described in the highway code. A new sign permitted for use within a low emission zone, to remind drivers, incorporating the LEZ symbol. LEZ end sign

Yards signs serve as countdown markers that will tell your distance to a particular point or area. These yards signs usually contain bars, and lesser bars mean a lesser distance from the motorway's exit or junction. These signs exist to allow you to prepare for what's ahead after the sign. The purpose of this amendment is to enable road users to make better informed choices about where to stop. It may be considered most useful where the distance between successive parking places is significant. City boundary sign colour A green-coloured yards sign with white bars: These yards signs are seen when you are nearing the closure of a dual carriageway or upon closing distance with a junction.

Fluorescence can also be particularly effective in drawing attention to signs mounted in deep shadow, e.g. below overhanging trees. So, you’re studying for your theory test and preparing to take driving lessons—exciting times! But also: so many things to learn! Chief among them is how to interpret all the various road signs you might come across on your travels. And that's no mean feat: there are tonnes of sign designs in the UK's Highway Code. Not only do things like shape and colour affect their meaning, but different types of roads have their own unique style of sign too. Enabling pedestrian or pedestrian/cycle zones to be applied in situations where they would otherwise be unsuitable, and/or;

Brown rectangles are for tourist information. Always exciting when you’re on your way to a theme park and you see that brown rectangle telling you you’re nearly there! Permitting the existing pedestrian and cycle zone signs (Diagrams 618.3B and 618.3C) to be identified by flashing lights. Current regulations require fixed time periods. Transitional and savings provisions Countdown markers to speed limits – warning of approach to restricted speed limit on approach to town or village It is noted that Blue Badge holders will be exempt from LEZ restrictions under the appropriate regulations (which are separate from the 2022 Regulations and General Directions).If you’re anything like us, you’re probably wondering what on earth ‘adverse camber’ means. It means the road is sloped to help drain away water. But as the big lorry on this road sign suggests, this does mean there’s a risk of lorries overturning. Extension of the permitted plates to be used with Diagram 562 (triangular exclamation mark warning sign), enabling cyclists crossing and concealed accesses to be highlighted.
