About this deal

Step 4 – Drybrush Karak Stone. This paint is extremely similar to the color of Armageddon Dust, but a little bit more vibrant. Drybrush Karak Stone across the entire base, including the slate chips, until there is a bit of highlight on all the raised bits of the texture. Be sure to drybrush all sides of the slate chip, as that’s how you get your defining lines on the stone that you can see at a distance.

I’m not a big basing guy. I prefer to make things as simple as possible so I can move on to the next model. Therefore, Games Workshop’s Texture Paints are a real life-saver for me.

Tints and Shades

That sounds like a bunch of steps, but really it’s very easy or a hobby idiot like me couldn’t do it. This is pretty much my go-to Yellow Scheme at this point. It changes around from time to time; sometimes I'll only use a single coat of Yriel followed by 2 Coats of Flash Gitz if I want it to be brighter. But its mostly this. The wash also has an Impact on the Final Look, Cassandora giving the whole thing a richer near-orange tint, Agrax making it look muddy with Speia and Fleshshade giving it a more "Earthy" Yellow. Verdict: Dry compounds do what they say. But are they really needed? As mentioned above, I’ve rather had more bright layer paints for more flexibility. The tones of the dry compounds are all very light, so I recommend drybrushing them over a dark basecoat first and add a wash or shade second, which not only tints those bright highlights but also helps to conceal the typical cloudy effect drybrushing creates. On the paler end of the scale for blues and greens, the less saturated Briar Queen Chill finds itself sitting alongside Aethermatic Blue.Apply it with a suitable tool, I use an old knife blade which is dangerous and stupid, I suggest an old brush would be safer and more effective. Naggaroth Night (purple) can be used to create shadows and add depth to areas of the model that are not hit by the sunlight. This is why Games Workshop went the hard way and introduced new paint names for everything. This way they avert the outcry of frustrated people who unsuspectingly bought new paint pots only to find that they are totally different from their old ones despite sharing the same name. New names make it clear that you have to expect a completely new product. Last but not least, new paint names mean Games Workshop can strengthen their intellectual property by trademarking everything, thus making it harder for other manufacturers (Vallejo) to model their range after GW’s one (as they did with their Game Colour range). The new paint range – basic observations

Add in about Vallejo Model Colour Iraqi Sand to your Beige Brown. Try about 1 part Iraqi to 9 parts brown and give it a whirl. By whirl I mean a standard drybrush. STEP NINE: DRYBRUSH 3: DRY BRUSH WITH A VENGEANCE I will also make liberal use of Lamenters Yellow if I feel that the colour isn't strong or saturated enough. You could probably even out some of this splotchiness with technical thinning Contrast medium. Note you can’t use water to thin Contrast Color technical paints. It won’t work well. Screaming Skull (bone) can be used as a highlight color to add depth to the yellow and create contrast between light and shadow.

It’s round two for Beige Brown. Go for a less extreme dry brush this time, leaving plenty of the inky goodness coming though. While in conversation with the guys in the shop, I mentioned my difficulty with yellow as being a reason I'd never painted attempted Imperial Fists or Lamenters. The fine folks at the Lakeside store suggested an alternative approach which I've since refined slightly, however the basics are all theirs. What you’re looking for in your first coat of primer is a very smooth surface. The smoother your early priming layers, the easier it will be to paint the rest of the model. Make sure mold lines are removed and you don’t create any bubbles in your primer. Yellow is already a flaky, unreliable color. Don’t add to your troubles with a poor primer foundation. A supercharged alternative to Warp Lightning, Karandras Green is one of the most intense Contrast paints in the whole range. The warm tone of the creamy ivory worked nicely to blend my yellow highlights with the rest of the model.
