About this deal

And like the electric versions, the best petrol scarifiers come with interchangeable cassettes for raking and scarifying. Moss typically grows in damp, shady areas and can pose a big problem for gardeners. This is because when left too long it forms dense mats which creep across your lawn, competing for valuable nutrients and moisture and hindering grass growth. Moss also prevents rainfall from reaching grass roots and can impede mowing with excessive build-up, jamming lawnmower blades. The working width is 40cm and the collector holds 45 litres of material, which, if you scarify regularly is a decent size. The Bosch AVR 1100 is equipped with one 32cm drum with 14 rotating BOR steel blades that gives them two very effective benefits…

If you prefer to control moss and thatch by scarifying little and often, the Boch AVR1100 is the machine for you. Finally, you are ready to use the Verticutter on your lawn. First, start its motor by pushing the on/off button. Then, being guiding it as you would regularly do with an automated push mower. The best time of the year to Verticut your lawn is during fall. If you apply the technique during this season, by the time spring arrives, your grass will be healthier and stronger than ever. The one you want is the Bosch 1100 AVR Model, the one I recommend, it’s more powerful at 1100w and has proper steel tine blades, these blades penetrate into the lawn, into the roots and remove moss, thatch and other debris that has built up under the surface of the grass.

If you’re in the market for a powered scarifier but you’re on a budget then the VonHaus 2-in-1 Scarifier and Aerator is a good alternative. As a method of controlling weeds and weed grasses without using harmful chemicals- gives weeds a hard time One cassette has steel blades which are great for slicing into the soil, which helps aerate the soil and also removes moss and thatch that’s embedded deep into the lawn. The other cassette has steel wire tines (teeth) that are ideal for removing moss and thatch from above the soil as well as leaves and other garden debris. Some people will verticut their lawns every fortnight between the months of April and September. This will almost completely eradicate the thatch layer on your lawn. The Weibang WB384RB Push Petrol Lawn Scarifier is powered by a 163cc Briggs & Stratton 750 engine which makes it well worth considering for professional use. It's powered by electricity and therefore you won’t need to worry about filling with fuel or running out of fuel. Simply plug it into your nearest power supply and you’re ready to go! There’ll be no fumes as you work, so your working environment will be free of smells and exhaust emissions. With the electrically powered Bosch UniversalVerticut 1100 all you’ll smell will be the sweet aroma of your garden, just as nature intended! Features

If you water your lawn two or three days before Verticutting, the damp soil will make the process easier. You can also wait for light rain and Verticut the lawn a couple of days after. This rule also applies for when you want to dethatch your lawn. The light weight (10kg), small size and fold away handles make this lawn rake excellent for smaller lawns or lawns with smaller strips of grass. The 32 cm width seems to be just right when you need to navigate lawns with flower beds or narrow strips, however, if I had a very large open lawn I would consider a lawn rake with a larger width. The handles once assembled can seem a little flimsy and insecure. Bosch have gone someway to resolving this by providing longer bolts to connect the handles. Manoeuvring it is also easy as it weighs in at less than 10kg. As you’d expect for the money though, it’s not perfect. Once all the thatch has been removed, use a lawn fertilizer across the entire surface of your lawn. Feeding your lawn directly after verticutting will allow for the optimal absorption of nutrients into the roots of the grass. Setting the height is very easy. Simply turn the dial on the front of the machine you can choose from 5 height settings, ranging from +5mm down to -15mm.

A scarifier is not the same as an aerator. A scarifier removes thatch and moss from within the lawn. An aerator either punches lots of holes into your lawn with a set of spikes (often on a big roller) or removes lots of tiny cores from your lawn. This allows water and lawn feed to go into the holes and reach the grass roots. Aerating does not remove any moss or thatch which is a big difference. You should then cut your grass. Set the mower to the lowest cutting section and get to work. If your lawnmower doesn’t automatically bag up the clippings, you should use a rake to remove them all from the surface of your lawn. The scarifier roller attachment uses strong steel blades to penetrate into the soil to remove weeds and pull out deep embedded thatch and moss from the lawn. The blades penetrating the soil also aerate the soil, which lets in moisture and nutrients down as far as the grass roots system. Replace the circular spring washer from Step 2, and flatten it down slightly so that it grips the spindle. ALR 900 Electric Lawn Raker

Lawn rakers have a plastic cylinder that is covered in sprung metal tines, which can pull out moss and thatch from your lawn in a combing action. Lawn scarifiers have the same plastic cylinder, but in their case it is covered with knife blades, which are capable of cutting into the lawn to remove thatch and moss. You can also use your scarifier on its lowest setting, to cut into the soil and improve aeration. Q: How to change lawn raker tines? That said, scarifying even a small lawn of 30 square meters with a handheld scarifier can take a few hours.
