About this deal

Mr. Wren: I had a dreadful dream. I dream't that my brother Neville was murdered by two men on the road from Bodmin to Wadebridge. One fired a pistol twice but I heard no report. Cornwall’s mines were dark and dangerous places, where terrifying accidents led to many deaths below ground. Hauntings at Wheal Coates Mine For those who want to delve deeper into the supernatural occurrences at Bodmin Jail, the Ghost Hunting Night offers a chance to take part in a paranormal investigation. Beneath you, the satanic darkness of Bodmin's great dungeon's lifeless heart creeps all about your like a choking mirror of misery.

The ghost of the last man to be hanged at Cornwall's infamous Bodmin Jail has been caught on video, claims a paranormal investigator. In 2018, a husband and wife ghost-hunting duo took cameras and other ghost-hunting equipment to the jail. The footage they took appears to show a ghost thought to be William Hampton, a prisoner who was hung at the jail, as well as visible "light orbs". [9] [10] The jail closed in 1927. Since that date, there has been no prison within the county of Cornwall. However, much of the jail remains in ruins, and presents a forbidding aspect when seen from a distance. Some parts have been refurbished and these now form an informative tourist attraction with exhibitions telling of the history of the jail and of offenders who were imprisoned there. It isn’t just Wadge and Weekes that refused to rest easy in the afterlife however, Bodmin Jail is full of ghosts. The spirit of Annie Jefferies, who was accused of being a witch is said to remain at the prison. It is said that she was starved to death, but the fact that it took her almost three months to die, only further served to reinforce that belief that she was in league with the Devil himself. Mounting the scaffold, she uttered her last words, "Lord deliver me from this miserable world," and, at precisely 8am, the executioner pulled the lever of the trap and sent her plummeting to her death.Despite its scary subject matter, or maybe because of it, the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic is very popular around Halloween. Maybe the next time the Warden Ghost of Bodmin Jail is confronted face to face by a ghost hunter, or a psychic investigator he should be specifically asked his identity to clear up the issue for once and for all.

Ghost hunter Tony Ferguson appears to have captured on camera what could be a spectral resident of the jail. Tony claims he and his wife were the only visitors to the prison when the footage was captured. He claims the pair heard banging and scratching sounds and saw shadows before setting up his camera. Selina immediately confessed to murdering him; but the reason she gave was perplexing. Whilst admitting she was indeed guilty of infanticide, she claimed she only committed the act as she felt forced to by her lover who said he would only marry her if she disposed of her son. This is a claim he most vehemently denied.Between 1785 and 1909 fifty five people were executed at Bodmin Gaol and all but four of the hangings were carried out in public, providing a grisly source of entertainment for thousands of spectators who would congregate in adjoining fields to witness some poor wretch take his or her plunge into eternity. Whether this evidence is indeed actually or should be seen as hearsay or even it should be admissable in court is a question to ask yourself? But it was certainly accepted by the magistrate and taken into consideration at her trial and contributed in a major way to the final guilty as charged decision of the judge. Here in the great Gaol of Bodmin where the bitter and condemned would grasp for one last hideous breath, just listen.

Between 1779 and 1927, Bodmin Jail - or to use its alternative name Bodmin Gaol - started life with its construction by prisoners of war, with the prison being the first British prison to hold prisoners in individual cells. Perhaps this is why the terrified and frustrated ghost of Matthew Weekes now roams the grey granite corridors, still lost in time and is still searching desperately for an answer.

The honorable Home Secretary, in his infinite wisdom; "Did not see fit to interfere with British justice,"and the reprieve simply did not come.
