About this deal

Christie often stayed at Abney Hall in Cheshire, which was owned by her brother-in-law, James Watts. She based at least two of her stories on the hall: the short story The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding, and the novel After the Funeral. Abney Hall became Agatha's greatest inspiration for country-house life, with all the servants and grandeur which have been woven into her plots. Now in its sixth year, a unique courtroom staging of WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION by Agatha Christie, directed by Lucy Bailey has captured the imagination of thousands; enthralled by the case of Leonard Vole

Sing a Song of Sixpence” was first published in Holly Leaves (published by Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News), 2 December 1929. It’s even more impressive that Witness for the Prosecution performances occur in a real court. London County Hall opened on 17 Jul. 1922, and served as the headquarters of local government for London for 64 years. When you’re watching the show, you’ll see the octagonal Council Chamber at the centre of County Hall — it once provided seating for over 200 council members and four galleries overlooking the Chamber for the public and members of the press. It’s the ideal immersive setting for an Agatha Christie courtroom drama. What is Witness for the Prosecution about? Based in a unique court room setting inside London’s County Hall, Agatha Christie’s Witness For The Prosecution is a landmark production of a gripping story of justice, passion and betrayal. Majestic foyer and bar areas and a spacious auditorium offer excellent ventilation and space for audiences to relax and enjoy this classic thriller. BUT then later it was expanded upon and turned into the novella, Dead Man's Mirror. You can find that one in the Murder in the Mews collection. a b "Witness for the Prosecution (1958), History". American Film Institute Catalog of Feature Films, The First 100 Years 1893-1993. 2019 . Retrieved 29 December 2020.Leonard Vole is arrested for the murder of Emily French, a wealthy older woman. The evidence seems overwhelmingly damning, which usually means he didn’t do it. The wife of the accuses, Romaine, takes the stand in his defense. Of course I can’t reveal what happens, but you will not be surprised it was adapted for the stage and film. Tyrone Power in his farewell film plays Leonard Vole who befriends a dotty old widow played by Norma Varden. She even rewrites her will leaving him the bulk of a very large estate. When she's murdered, Scotland Yard arrests Power.

Based on a short story by Christie that was initially named Traitor’s Hands and published in a magazine in 1925, Witness for the Prosecution finally became known as such in 1933, when it appeared with 11 other stories in a Christie collection called The Hound of Death. After its publication, she went on to pen a stage version, which opened 20 years later at what is now the Gillian Lynne Theatre; it has since also been adapted for both television and film. However, it is not really a mystery plot in that we have to puzzle out the clues. The murder is not solved by a detective figuring it out based on the evidence. It is more of a confession that reveals the truth. I guess that is more dramatic on stage, but personally I prefer the puzzle aspect. Young Leonard has been arrested for murder. He befriended an old lady, who changed her will and then was murdered under mysterious circumstances. The housekeeper says that she heard Leonard talking with the old lady near the time of death. Leonard's only alibi is his wife, who states that he was home at the time of the murder. But what jury would believe a wife in the witness box trying to protect her husband?

Join thousands of teachers who are already making their lives easier.

When an elderly and wealthy spinster Emily French is found murdered, suspicion falls on Leonard Vole, the man to whom she hastily bequeathed her riches before she died.
