I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a plot that persuades you to wonder. To readers who can accept the bittersweet circumstances of life displayed within their fiction. This is not a character-driven novel. The story shines brighter. I don't think I ever fully connected with any character at all--and the fact that I was moved to tears by the finish is what made this a five-star read for me. This review may seem just as ambiguous as the story itself, but it must be if you wish to obtain the full effect of its delivery.

Someone once wrote that a novel should deliver a series of small astonishments. I get the same thing spending an hour with you.so what im trying to say is, the first book means a lot to me. it has for eight years. and naturally, a prequel scared the shit out of me. i imagine it’s how fans of Ari and Dante felt when the sequel released last year. but i couldn’t not read this. i owe it to 14 year old me who was sobbing in her bedroom, clutching this to her chest and never wanting to let go. Cadence particularly enjoys the company of those she calls "The Liars": her cousins Johnny and Mirren, as well as Gat, the nephew of Johnny's mother's boyfriend. The Liars, including Cadence, are all about the same age; Johnny and Mirren are like the siblings Cadence never had, and Gat...well, Gat steals Cadence's heart immediately.

Although I found this story entirely unique, if I had to compare, I’d say its structure reminds me a bit of On the Jellicoe Road. Its haunting tone, as well. I like the lemon scavenger hunt game and the Who Am I? game the family plays. I like their family nights. I like the dad's quotes as an advice to get through life. I enjoyed the twists! The audiobook was good because the narrator sings at the singing parts. I just finished reading the book and so many feels are tumbling so I may be confused and wrong in the text above, but that's what I am feeling and wanted to express it to you. Beside the summary, I like the writing style, it was rich and beautiful and I would recommend this book to readers out there. It's a very dark book and I assure you that you will find it very interesting.

Although welcomed to the island every summer, Gat never feels truly at ease because he is of Indian decent and can tell that the Sinclair grandparents do not approve of him. The four grow up together each summer and call themselves “the Liars.” Somehow Beechwood Island just keeps feeling more alluring to me. You’d think after reading these two books and knowing the history of it all I’d be wanting to run a million miles… but why does a summer holiday here sound so fun? Why?! It gives you all of those fun summer vacation vibes… yet with all of the underlying feeling in your stomach that something is seriously not right. The We Were Liars /Family of Liars series technically falls in the YA genre, but the writing is so sophisticated that it will appeal to adults as well. I rarely read YA, but this series is one exception I will make! It is a very character driven domestic suspense novel focusing on real issues such as coping with death, substance abuse, secrets, and lies. the prequel follows 17 year old Caroline “Carrie” Sinclair, one of the three Sinclair sisters and Johnny’s (from We Were Liars) mother, during one unforgettable summer. it was very reminiscent of the first book, but stands entirely on its own. stylistically, both books are similar, the narrative style of this book echoing the narration of the first. but plot wise, they’re nothing alike. The quality of the writing, the expressiveness and the atmosphere of the whole thing just drew me in. Every single time. so, just like Little Bee, this book begs you "NOOO, DON'T TELL ITS SEEEEKRITS!!" and if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE. I love this book. I really do. I didn't expect to, but then I just fell in love with it and now it's an obsession. My face heats with shame. “I’m sorry.” The Love Interest: “You’re saying Granddad thinks you’re Heathcliff?”

This book doesn’t have a jaw dropping twist but it’s a sensitive psychological and realistic fiction that portraits an unforgettable dysfunctional family.We Were Liars focuses on the theme of consequences of one's mistakes. It is centered on the wealthy, seemingly perfect Sinclair family, who spend every summer sitting gathered on their private island. However, not every summer is the same—when something happens to Cadence during the summer of her fifteenth year, the four "Liars" (Cadence, Johnny, Gat and Mirren) re-emerge two years later to prompt Cadence to remember the incident. Another thing I loved was how different the characters were. The whole book is from Cady’s first-person narrative, and as you can tell, that narrative is very individual only to Cadence. The writing style and the prose would have been completely different if it had been from any of the other characters’ perspectives. Imagine if Gat or Johnny or Mirren had narrated this.
