About this deal

This uneven transmission leads to a continuous barrage of jerky wheel movements in the bike while riding. Sometimes you’ll hear that WD-40 is only for removing water and keeping things rust-free. I have heard and read from other cyclists claiming that WD-40 isn’t a lubricant.

If a chain and cassette are worn out after 3000 miles, for example, this could be within a year's worth of riding for plenty of cyclists. The cost of a new chain and cassette will far exceed a bottle of more premium chain lubricant. I have had to explain to plenty of cyclists that their drivetrain is completely worn out and needs replacing which has resulted in a large bill. It's never a nice conversation, especially if you're on the receiving end of the bad news, but it's something that's totally avoidable with a little effort and the right chain lube. What are penetration issues? To be very clear – WD-40 will not ruin your bike chain. It’s a great product not only for cleaning your bike chain, but also as your main lubricant. After spraying, wait a few minutes to let the WD-40 Specialist Bike Chain Lube penetrate before wiping the excess from your chain. Enjoy your ride, knowing you’ve optimized and protected your drivetrain. Will WD-40 remove rust from the bike chain? There’s no debate on this topic. WD-40 is great at removing rust from your bike chain. S100 White Chain Spray 2.0 had the best extreme pressure performance in a chain lube, and performs well, as well as giving a clear but not untidy indication of where you have – and haven’t applied it. Most modern bikes use a chain with O-rings (or X-rings) that seal in grease from the factory between the rivet and the bushing, which keeps it flexing smoothly and reduces internal wear. That’s there for the lifetime of the chain, which is why you don’t want to be too aggressive with your cleaning, or use products that could penetrate. Würth High Performance Dry looks really good, and did well across the board but it struggled in comparison to the others in the wear and weld tests. How much that matters will have to come down to your own judgement, but it did have better wear protection than the Muc-Off. With the chain cut apart, the centre roller can be removed, showing how it needs to be kept lubricated

The four-ball anti-wear test in IP 239 sees one ball sitting on top of another three, with a static load of 40kg at ambient temperature. The top ball is spun at 1,475rpm for 60 minutes, then the wear scars on the balls are measured radially and perpendicular under a microscope. The results are averaged out, giving a Mean Wear Scar Diameter. With no industry standard I can’t tell you if there’s a lower limit to this, but the comparison in no less valuable.

The Controversy of WD-40

We would recommend simply splitting chain lubricants into hot melt immersive waxes and drip lubricants. I.e lubricants that come out of a bottle as a liquid and go from there based on your requirements. Is it ok to use WD40 on my chain? While drive chains aren’t kept in a bath of lubricant, a decent lube will – to some extent – help to reduce this damage, especially where it creeps under the unsealed roller. Finding the right chain lube can feel a bit like trying to find the best road bike saddle for you; the lube that will perform the best for you will depend largely on where you ride, how much you ride, and how often you clean and or re-lube. Cleaning regime: religious or couldn't care less, degrease or don't degrease first, brush or chain machine

Gear oil WILL make more of a mess, and it’ll need reapplying a lot more than a dedicated chain lube, but overall it performs better than chainsaw oil.

Juice Lubes Bearing Juice Waterproof Grease

After a wet ride ideally try to clean your chain and remove as much contamination as you can. Start by wiping down the outside, then you can use a spray degreaser to keep the chain on the bike, or remove it and essentially repeat the submersion bath in chain degreaser or white spirits etc until the liquid remains clear. You can refer to the ZF maintenance guide to help you here. What's the best way to apply drip lube? When treating your chainsaw with WD-40 Specialist Roller Chain Lube, use the nozzle’s precision stream option to target hard-to-reach areas of the chain. Reason five: Chain lube can help protect from corrosion; this doesn’t just keep it looking better – if rust builds up on the inside faces of the plates, this again will cause damage to the O-rings that protect that factory-fitted grease. WD-40 is primarily a cleaner, but also a lubricant. While there are reputable organizations and bike repairmen who say otherwise it is actually fine to use WD-40 on your bike chain and bike.
