A.D. It is a dark time for the world. Humanity is just crawling out from under three hundred years of domination by the race of vampires known as the Nobility. The war against the vampires has taken its toll; cities lie in ruin, the countryside is fragmented into small villages and fiefdoms that still struggle against nightly raids by the fallen vampires-and the remnants of their genetically manufactured demons and werewolves. Being one of the very first anime to have a western release, Vampire Hunter D was dubbed by Streamline pictures for American in 1988, and then appeared in Europe in early 1993 via agreed distribuition by Manga Entertainment. The story is quite basic and low bass, basically; a young girl finds herself fighting through a forrest of demons, and it isn't long beofre she realises that she is trespassing on the Count. Magnus Lee's land, and involuntarily teh Count takes her blood as compensation (i.e. passing on the Vampire infection). But the Count sends out his minions to intervine, alongside his Daughter and her Mutant hentchman, who are sercetly trying to kill the girl, rather than bring her to the Count, as they feel that she will disgrace the Lee Family. Most of the voice cast for the original OVA reprised their roles. Originally released on cassette tape, in 2005 they were re-released as a special edition, five-disc Vampire Hunter D Audio Drama Box, including a small supplemental booklet with a new short story by Kikuchi and an "art cloth" with an illustration by Amano.

Novels, Manga, Anime: Vampire Hunter D was originally a series of seventeen novels written by Hideyuki Kikuchi and illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano (famous for his work on character designs and the logos for the Final Fantasy series) starting in 1983. Nonetheless the style of writing reminds me more of western novels than of eastern work, so if you for some reason dislike the usual style of light novels, then you might still enjoy Vampire Hunter D as it doesn't really feel like light novel - without the Japanese name of the author and prior knowledge of the franchise, I don't think I would have guessed this is a light novel series. In the final scene of the movie, D arrives at Leila's funeral, watching her loved ones mourn from a distance. Many decades have passed since all of the previous events, as a little girl revealed to be Leila's granddaughter approaches and greets D, and invites him to stay with her family for a while. D declines, saying that he simply came to "repay a favor to an old friend, who feared no one would mourn her death." D admits that he was glad she was wrong. The girl thanks him, and D replies by smiling gently at her, and leaves. The plan was to adapt the entire catalogue of Vampire Hunter D novels into manga form. Seiyuu: As with the music, I didn't notice them that much, but neither did they make that much of an impression on me, so, again, we'll say passable. Greco Rohman, son of the mayor, also wants Doris for himself. The same goes for the skilled figher Rei-Ginsei and his Fiend Corps. Both men are eager to eliminate D, as his skills and Doris' favor makes them see him as a threat. Doris knows she isn't the only one in trouble, her younger brother, Dan, is perceived as her weakness, and there are more than one person out there willing to use him as leverage against her. into the “okay” category, earning it a rating of 6/10. The movie’s strength lies more in its visual storytelling and character development.

Although effective for that time, the animation is dated and I can think of several old titles that still hold up well until now, with Neo Tokyo being one of them. As well as one that pre-dates it by six years, which happens to be Miyazaki's Castle of Cagliostro. To my experience, those whom favor superior visuals first will more than likely walk away hating this movie. The action scenes can range from just barely ok to brutal, with characters sliced in half to fingers being crushed off. I really don't have a problem with the artwork, but I think the BGM is more hit than miss and wasn't always used properly, because at one point I can think of the music was used at the wrong time. One scene that stands out to me happens to be the first appearance of D. While watching him slowly approach on his horse and completely shrouded with mystery. I think the scene would have been more effective with the complete removal of music, with more focus on the sound effects: such as the whistling of the wind, coupled with the slow, eerie plodding of the horses steps. I believe this method would have only enhanced the style of the movie, instead it just had a rather bland feel to it and D really didn't give off an aura as an intimidating figure; but then again that's just me.
