Between 1964 and 1990, 650 acres (3 km2) near Brookeville in Montgomery County, Maryland were acquired and set aside as the Rachel Carson Conservation Park, administered by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. In 1969, the Coastal Maine National Wildlife Refuge became the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge; expansions will bring the size of the refuge to about 9,125 acres (37 km2). In 1985, North Carolina renamed one of its estuarine reserves in honor of Carson, in Beaufort. In March this year, East Devon District Council announced a “massive step” in coastal protection for the town, including the construction of offshore breakwaters and the building of a 120 meter long wall or “super groyne”. But it said “not all settlements will be able to be protected from coastal erosion in the long-term”.

Her best-known book, Silent Spring (1962), raised awareness about the use of pesticides and contributed to the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency. A shore can be on a lake or a river (unlike coast, which is only used with open water). So shore is equivalent to coast in the context of rivers and lakes. You would only use it for large rivers though; otherwise use "bank" or "riverbank". Then David reminded everybody “We don’t do encores”. Something anybody who has been The Wedding Present live would know. There are a lot of people who made ‘At The Edge Of The Sea’ possible. The well-deserved list of thank you’s from David included the bands, their crews, those on the merch stall and those who made online steam possible. After saying “See you next year. We’ll leave you with this one” David realised he hadn’t introduced his band. I’m sure everybody knew who they were, but that wasn’t the point. Unsurprisingly each band member got a massive cheer as their name was called out. What causes coastal erosion? The sea has also eaten into gardens, leaving the houses in peril, as well as what appears to be a children’s playground.

The result was Silent Spring (1962), which brought environmental concerns to an unprecedented share of the American people. Although Silent Spring was met with fierce opposition by chemical companies, it spurred a reversal in national pesticide policy, which led to a nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides, and it inspired a grassroots environmental movement that led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Carson was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Ballantyne is a collaboration with musician and composer Calum Martin, who has been involved in composing, recording, performing and teaching Gaelic music for more than 40 years. A small headland appears to have disappeared and Beach Road which leads to it has been cut in half, while new cliffs have been gouged out of the seafront.
