About this deal

As the investigation continues into how the 258-year-old Crooked Pub burned down, questions around the much-loved public house remains. Enjoyable as a period piece, as a mystery and a character study. As always, characterization shines. There's some brief reading uncomfortableness as Christie delves into Aristide's canny business practices, which may or may not have to do with him being Greek. I wasn't terribly offended, but it was definitely one of those things that make the modern reader say 'hmm.' Otherwise, well worth the time. The place began to fill-up as I was leaving, with one couple intrigued by the crooked nature of The Crooked House. The action takes place in and near London in the autumn of 1947. Christie said this and Ordeal by Innocence were her favorites among her own works.

Maybe that was what had happened to Esme’s parents when they moved to the town with their young family, full of plans to restore the dilapidated house on the outskirts of town, the house that was known locally as ‘The Crooked House.’ The clues are there, at each step, and quite early on I had put together most of the pieces, hence for me there weren't any big revelations at the end. All was explained, however the biggest plot hole for me is the timeline itself. Why is this happening 13 years later, when Alison is 27 years old? Why not sooner? Because this is just what a nightmare is. Walking about among people you know, looking in their faces- and suddenly the faces change- and it's not someone you know any longer- it's a stranger- a cruel stranger...." Staffordshire Police confirmed they were treating the fire as arson, and on Thursday, 24 August, two men were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. Ok. I liked that Charles was upfront with Sophia about what his father wanted him to do, and I liked that Sophia herself wanted Charles to help investigate and find out what actually happened. It made the couple seem immediately solid, and you started rooting for them to come out of this whole ordeal and live happily ever after.Just then, Sophia tells him that Edith has left with Josephine. Charles and Sophia take off in pursuit of Edith, who left a note for Charles to find in his car. Sophia reads Edith's note: it is a confession to the murder, but Charles doesn't believe it. I must also praise the atmosphere she created, rich with intrigue and menace, and clever way she suggested possibilities as the story moved forward. One brother, one sister, a mother, a father, an uncle, an aunt by marriage, a grandfather, a great-aunt, and a step-grandmother.' Maybe there was somebody in the town who had been involved in what had happened, somebody who knew what had happened, somebody who was keeping secrets. Mr Lees says the situation following the fire was "completely unacceptable" and "contrary to instructions" provided by their officers.

Aristide Leonides, the man who was murdered; born in Smyrna, Turkey, he arrived in London in 1884 when he was 24 This book starts out as a heart thumper drawing the reader into the fray as Kent describes the night when Esme Grace narrowly escapes with her life as she runs and hides in the marsh just beyond the crooked house that was her home. In that crooked house she has left behind the remains of her family - her mother, brother, younger twin sisters - and the only other survivor, her father and suspected killer. But this is not a romantic drama , it is a mystery and it delivers satisfactorily on the mystery end.
