About this deal

The ONLY reason I give this book four stars instead of five was because it was that much of a disappointment (a HUGE disappointment, in other words) that it was so short. I really hate Louis Sachar right now for not making this a little bit longer (especially considering I paid a totally unfair 41 dirhems for it, but that's just the fault of the cheapskates who own the bookshop). You know it's funny, you'll hate a really good author alot more than you'll hate a totally lousy author because in the case of the former you have expectations. And right now I am so angry I need a moment to compose myself before I continue this review; Stanley must have looked surprised, because Mr. Sir went on to explain that they started early to avoid the hottest part of the day. “No one is going to baby-sit you,” he added. “The longer it takes you to dig, the longer you will be out in the sun. If you dig up anything interesting, you are to report it to me or any other counselor. When you finish, the rest of the day is yours.” urn:lcp:stanleyyelnatssu0000sach:epub:89171536-8f2e-451c-b0b1-6b2cfa1b47f1 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier stanleyyelnatssu0000sach Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t4bp8xp1j Invoice 1652 Isbn 0440419476 Sachar, Louis. He looked out the window at the vast emptiness. He watched the rise and fall of a telephone wire. In his mind he could hear his father’s gruff voice softly singing to him.Stanley Yelnats I: Stanley Yelnats I is the son of Elya Yelnats as well as the great-grandfather of Stanley Yelnats IV. He was the one whose treasure was stolen by Kate Barlow while he was moving from New York to California. He is known to have survived by climbing to the top of a thumb-shaped mountain (God's Thumb) which happens to be Sam's old onion field. Armpit has a suggestion about the showers: that the four-minute shower should be changed so the water sprays for a minute, stops for one minute to allow them to apply soap, then restart for three minutes to finish. The suggestion is taken, but instead of three minutes of water, there are now only two, allowing the Warden to save a minute of water each. Every time an experiment failed, Stanley could hear him cursing his dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather. It also helps physically. If you can make a perfect circle, exactly five feet in diameter and five feet deep, with sides that are perpendicular to the ground, you will have dug the absolute minimum amount of dirt required. No one's ever done that, not even Zero, but he's come close

They ended becoming a minute shorter. This thin survival guide may be a bit incomprehensible to those who have not read "Holes". Yet, it is in itself a great summary of Four Life Lessons that Stanley has learnt from his stay at Camp Green Lake: Imagine your misfortune if, like Stanley Yelnats, you found yourself the victim of a miscarriage of justice and interned in Camp Green Lake Correctional Institute. How would you survive? Thoughtfully Louis Sachar has learnt his knowledge and expertise to the subject and created this wonderful, quirky, and utterly essential guide to toughing it out in the Texan desert. Spiced with lots of information about the characters in “Holes”, as well as lots of do’s and don’ts for survival, this is an essential book for all those hundreds of thousands of “Holes'” fans. Stanley Yelnats’ Survival Guide to Camp Green Lake (Holes, #1.5) by Louis Sachar – eBook Details Camp Green Lake is located on a dried-up lake in the U.S. state of Texas. The name is a false description, as the area is a parched, barren desert. The only weather is the scorching sun. No rain has fallen since the day Sam was murdered. The only plants mentioned are two oak trees in front of the Warden's cabin; the book notes that "the Warden owns the shade." The abandoned town of Green Lake is located by the side of the lakebed. Camp Green Lake is a juvenile detention center, where inmates spend most of their time digging holes. The majority of the book alternates between the present day story of Stanley Yelnats, the story of Elya Yelnats in Latvia (mid-1800s) and the story of Katherine Barlow in the town of Green Lake (about a generation later). Later chapters focus less on the past stories. Themes Fairy tales Published by Yearling, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books a division of Random House, Inc., New York

It was a song his father used to sing to him. The melody was sweet and sad, but Stanley’s favorite part was when his father would howl the word “moon.” Squid (Alan): Squid is a member of Group D at Camp Green Lake and one of X-Ray’s closest friends and enforcer. He is often the one taunting Stanley for sending and receiving letters to his mother. Just like X-Ray, Squid is very tough but very subservient to X-Ray's rules and directions. However, he does have a sensitive side to him, as Stanley wakes to hear him crying one night, and Alan asks Stanley to write to his (Alan's) mother when Stanley leaves Camp Green Lake.

There used to be a town of Green Lake as well. The town shriveled and dried up along with the lake, and the people who lived there.

You can't let anybody else tell you what your choices are. Sometimes they won't give you the right choice."

Beware the Nice Ones: Remember that even the seemingly harmless ones were arrested for good reason. He looked at the guard who sat slumped in his seat and wondered of he had fallen asleep. The guard was wearing sunglasses, so Stanley couldn’t see his eyes.
