About this deal

Bluetooth – Most upscale Sony headphone designs will include the latest version of this wireless audio standard. This means that they will be capable of linking seamlessly with other audio devices (provided they are also Bluetooth-enabled). So, you can sync your headphones up with stereos, gaming consoles, and digital audio players with ease. Historically, this has been associated with longer charge times, but this isn't necessarily the case any more. More recent Sony devices can balance wireless connectivity with easy charging and battery times – but this definitely falls off with cheaper models. So if you do want hassle-free wireless audio, it's often worth exploring high-end designs. The XM4 are more convenient to use, too. While the XM3 only connect to one device at a time, the XM4 can connect to two devices – such as your laptop and phone – simultaneously. It may sound like a subtle difference but it can make your life a whole lot easier. That being said, the XM4 are a clear improvement over the XM3 across the board and although no longer the best noise-cancelling headphones (thanks, in the main to the WH-1000XM5) there still seems to be plenty of life left in the model. Battery life and charging may be more important factors. Unfortunately, even the best wireless models require charging and are vulnerable to losing charge at inconvenient moments. That's something wired headphones don't suffer from, which means they tend to be preferable for using at desks or around the home. Then again, wireless models are superior for active audio fans who prize mobility and flexibility. If that sounds like you, investing in headphones with industry-leading charging and battery times is a no-brainer. So Sony will be a good brand to choose.

They replaced the already excellent WH-1000XM3 in August 2018, and since then they’ve been ushered out by the WH-1000XM4, which themselves have been replaced by WH-1000XM5. Given this history of constant innovation, it's hardly surprising to learn that the company has a strong reputation for headphone design. Iconic large-padded models like the MDR-V6 (introduced in 1985) have been a mainstay in living rooms and around the heads of pedestrians for generations now. And since then, the pace of development hasn't slowed.I tried the Optimizer on the ground and the Headphones Connect app gave me a reading of 1.0 atm (standard atmosphere). When I tried it again at 35,000ft in the air, the reading dropped down to 0.8 atm. Clearly the headphones thought there was a difference, but I didn’t hear the NC behave any differently. Locations are registered in the companion app in two different ways. You can add specific places using an in-app map, while simultaneously having the headphones learn about the places you frequent using the GPS on your phone. The last aspect of performance worth analyzing is the 1000XM3’s call quality. In several phone calls made with the headphones, the people we spoke to reported that we sounded clear – if a bit quieter – than if we had used the phone’s built-in microphone. This is likely due to the extra microphones Sony has embedded into the headphones themselves.

All that effort has paid off, because the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones offer a clear sonic upgrade over the preceding pair, to the extent that the M2s, which we loved at the time, sound closed-in and almost dull by comparison. While it will connect with each of my computers etc, it refuses to connect to my partner's MacBook Pro even when its little blue light is flashing indicating it is pairing mode - it just doesn't appear in the list of nearby devices. Have given up trying to get a connection. You can also choose how long you want it to remain active after speech to ensure the mode doesn’t close mid-conversation. The “short” (five seconds) and “standard” (15 seconds) options felt a little restrictive to me, but 30 seconds proved ample. If you’ve got a particularly chatty partner or friend you can choose to prevent the mode from shutting down automatically and manually end it by touching either of the earbuds. Zwei Nachteile sind aber hier anzumerken (ansonsten hätte ich 5 Sterne vergeben). Der Bügel kann schon mal kaputt gehen. Bei einem Kopfhörer ist dieser schon mal gerissen und musste geklebt werden. The automatic power-off feature to save battery when no audio signal is detected, can now be adjusted. Sony’s Headphones Connect app allows you prolong the amount of time you have before the power cuts off. Those who just want the NC without listening to music can turn the auto-off timer off altogether. I can confirm this is great for napping on planes. Sony WH-1000XM3 – The most important current model, the WH-1000XM3 has a headband-style design, and features wireless technology. But wireless connectivity isn't the main selling point with these headphones. Instead, their noise cancellation technology is what catches the eye. As Sony states, these headphones “take you even deeper into silence”, allowing listeners to focus on the music they love, without distractions. The critics have responded favourably, with Expert Review praising the sound quality and comfort provided by these elite headphones, which should be suitable for a general audience.
