If you clean the drain with water, make sure that your dry it completely. You can as well wipe it with a bit of rubbing alcohol. Here's a step by step guide on how I fitted the kitchen sink waste pipe and trap in my utility. It also includes a trap connected to a washing machine hose. With plumber’s putty you can test the seal immediately. It however takes about 3 hours for silicone caulk to dry and up to 24 hours to cure. Why sealing kitchen sinks is necessary

Apply the sealant. When you’re happy with the flow and you’re sure that the surface is completely dry, apply the sealant around the sink. Even pressure is important; maintain a steady flow to create a smooth layer of sealant that prevents moisture and mildew. There are a handful of ways you could do this. I decided that instead of drilling a hole for another waste pipe, I linked my washing machine hose to the sink. So under my sink its pretty straight forward there is a U-bend like trap that connects to a 90 degree fitting which at one end screws onto the U bend and the other end its a bit different.

I headed to Bunnings, because I had to get some plants, and enquired if I could get the new rubber seals so I wouldn’t have to replace the whole plug. A pop-up sink stopper has 3 rods which help it to work as it does. The one connected to the drainpipe (and hooked to the actual stopper body) is called a pivot rod. The rod/strip with holes on it where the pivot rod is connected is called a clevis rod. Clear the space under the kitchen sink. The reason you need to disconnect the P-trap is that it is always a good time to clean it as well. This is especially important if your sink is draining slowly as well. You can as well omit this step. The reason our sink plugs wouldn’t hold water was because the rubber washer underneath needed to be replaced. You can pull apart the plug by untwisting the middle handle part, which allows you to replace the rubber washer underneath. This is the seal that allows the plug to stop water going down the drain. It didn’t matter how I contorted the washer, the plugs wouldn’t keep the water in. If your kitchen/bathroom sink is leaking from below, you will need to remove it, apply a new sealant and then install it again. You could also be installing a new sink and wondering which sealant to use to create a watertight and long-lasting seal.
