About this deal

For more than 10 years I’ve used deodorant-only products, because someone warned of a cancer risk. It’s a bit hard to find, but I found a crystal roll-on product that is fragrance, paraben and aluminum chlorohydrate free. Seems to work well. If I hadn’t just bought a new bottle, I’d try the Graedons’ Milk of Magnesia roll-on deodorant.” Exposure to aluminium can come from sources other than deodorants, but I think we can agree that if you can easily avoid aluminium in deodorants, it is probably best to avoid it.

Comments: Not so keen on this one. There’s triclosan, and PEGs. There’s also clove flower extract, which although natural, is an irritant. Butylene glycol is also an irritant. All in all, there are better choices out there.Deodorants and antiperspirants are the most commonly used cosmetic products, with men and women applying them every single day. But there are concerns about the safety and possible adverse effects of traditional deodorants. That may explain why crystal deodorant is gaining popularity.

This ingredient is mainly used as a deodorant in cosmetics, also can be used in baking powder as a leavening acid with the European food additive number E522. How is Potassium Alum Made ? This product is a crystal made from potassium alum - a natural mineral salt - and sits on the surface of the skin in a microscopic layer, where it kills bacteria. Ammonium alum is another one you'll commonly find in this type of product. Crystal deodorant is available as a stone, roll-on, or spray. Sometimes you can find it as a gel or powder. If you use a stone, it may come on its own or attached to a plastic base. It is a common myth that sweat causes that unpleasant body odour when it is in fact the underarm bacteria reacting with the sweat which causes odour. A Crystal Deodorant made from Potassium Alum works by gliding across the skin’s surface when damp, forming a porous barrier that prevents the odour-causing underarm bacteria from multiplying. Crystal Deodorant doesn’t congest the sweat glands and allows you to sweat naturally without getting that ‘sweaty’ odour. Perspiration is a natural process which purifies and cools the body. Sweating also aids the process of expelling toxins from the body, including the: a potassium aluminum sulfate KAl(SO4)2·12H2O or an ammonium aluminum sulfate NH4Al(SO4)2·12H2O used especially as an emetic [causes vomiting] and as an astringent and styptic [to prevent bleeding].”Crystal deodorant may be effective for up to 24 hours. If you wish to apply the deodorant in between showers, you can clean your underarm using rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball before reapplying. The fully natural volcanic alum crystal deodorant is so effective that even people with hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) get along well with real alum. On the other hand, the genuine alum allows people with sensitive skin to rejoice in being able to deodorize again. BUT, potassium alum can also be synthetically produced, often using aluminium hydroxide (a white cosmetic opacifying agent) mixed with potassium or ammonium sulphate in sulphuric acid. And there’s that little ‘gotcha’ moment – even knowing the right ingredients is not enough if they’ve been synthetically produced using the toxic chemicals you’re trying to avoid. However, the uses of aluminium sulphate (E520), aluminium sodium sulphate (E521), aluminium potassium sulphate (E522) and aluminium ammonium sulphate (E523) in food are decreasing over time in Europe due to the change in legislation coming into force in February 2014, where the applications are only in two categories: candied cherries and only egg white. ( 1) China also restricted its uses

There are also studies indicating that aluminum exposure from deodorant use has been linked to rising incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. However, the results of the one study that evaluated persistent aluminum-containing deodorant use and Alzheimer’s had inconclusive results. It is a weak acid with the PH between 3.0 and 4.0 (10 % solution). It dissociates Al3+ when dissolved in water and reacts with water to release H+. The following is the reaction equation: As your hands should be clean, this might not be so practical with a deodorant you want to take on the go. Run the stone under water and then apply it to clean underarms. Make sure you don’t use too much water. If you’re using a stone that’s attached to a plastic applicator, make sure the water doesn’t go into the base. You can store the stone upside down after use to prevent this from happening. There are also fears that aluminium found in everyday items such as aluminium cans, antacids and antiperspirants could cause Alzheimer's. But the Alzheimer's Society says: 'No convincing relationship between amount of exposure or aluminium in the body and the development of Alzheimer's disease has been established.' Regular deodorants kill not just the bad bacteria in your armpits, but also the good bacteria that supports your immune system. Also, the lid is made out of regular plastic - the company says that when it tried to design a sugarcane lid, it crumbled. However, if you have ever experienced an underarm rash or stinging after using traditional deodorants and antiperspirants, then crystal deodorants may be worth a shot. (Still, everyone’s skin is different, and some users have reported an allergic reaction to crystal deodorants as well, often in the form of a rash.) Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) has also limited the use of aluminum potassium sulfate and aluminum ammonium sulfate to a maximum use level of 0.1 g (as aluminum) per kg in bread, moist cakes and confections since August 27, 2018. There are currently three unisex scents available, and the subscription option is easy to change online. Phthalates often aren’t listed on ingredients lists. Instead, they are found within ingredients labelled as ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’. Medical News Today has strict sourcing guidelines and draws only from peer-reviewed studies, academic research institutions, and medical journals and associations. We avoid using tertiary references. We link primary sources — including studies, scientific references, and statistics — within each article and also list them in the resources section at the bottom of our articles. You can learn more about how we ensure our content is accurate and current by reading our editorial policy. Therefore, more specific studies on topical alum use are necessary to see if there are correlations with Alzheimer’s disease. Environmental toxin TIPS: In Morocco, deodorants are not necessarily worn each day. Some Moroccans only use alum crystal deodorant during the summer months. Probably by force of habit, most Westerners apply deodorant everyday. However as long as the underarms are cleaned daily, and shirts and tops are changed daily, it is really only necessary to wear deodorants when we are working in close proximity to people, or when we have a highly active life.If you’re using a spray, you may want to have a towel wrapped around your body that can catch any excess liquid that might run down from your underarm. There may be a slight chalky residue left on your skin after application, so it’s a good idea to wait until the deodorant dries before getting dressed. It works to kill bacteria and prevent body odor. Instead of clogging your pores so the moisture doesn’t create a habitable environment for bacteria, this mineral salt deodorant prevents bacterial growth, while letting your pores excrete sweat. However, no solid evidence that aluminium toxicity is associated with the increase of Alzheimer’s disease and the controversy is not resolved by the FDA. ( 9) Conclusion It told us: 'Some people have questioned whether aluminium in some deodorants and antiperspirants can affect cancer risk. But the scientific evidence doesn't currently support a link, so we don't want people to worry.'
