Fiction and the real world are porous, and novelists were emboldened to chart the daily pitfalls of bringing up baby, especially the need for mothers to Stretch Armstrong themselves into a crossbreed of camp counselor/cruise-ship director/housekeeper/breadwinner/nag of all trades. it doesn't happen often, but sometimes i come across books that are so well written, so unique, so groundbreaking to me that i'm angry i never thought to do any of what it did in my own writing. this book expanded my ideas of what novels about grief can even do, and rearranged in my head who is allowed to own that grief: the mother, the daughter, the grandmother. it all cycles in and out until you find yourself unsure of who you relate to or feel worse for. i'm including a small excerpt because i would be remiss if i didn't. in this moment in the book, ruth is attending the funeral for a little girl she once taught in school. A book begging to be read on the beach, with the sun warming the sand and salt in the air: pure escapism.She takes the study of love into uncharted territory and every sentence has its depths and pleasures

When Eleanor reveals that she is pregnant, Ruth can only wait and watch. The child, Lily, is born an addict and the brief scenes from the hospital are devastating. i have truly never made a greater fool of myself than when laughing and crying in equal measure, in public places, while reading this book. Despite, or maybe because of its unrelenting urban setting of flats in dubious areas, the writing of place has an intensely lyrical quality of genuine love for the unaccountable pieces of life. There is a sad humour of appreciating the challenging nature of teaching teenage girls, for the little acts of love that can transform a day, for the love of a child. At first I thought that this book would be a tough read, and at times it is challenging, but the love that Ruth has for Lily, and even the elusive Eleanor is so beautifully expressed that I was so pleased to have the opportunity to read and review this very special book. I can’t tell you how sad I was to learn of ______’s passing.
