About this deal

JAMIE STEVENSON had been a lieutenant in the crime clan led by best friend Tony McGovern. But, by June 2000, Tony has sided with his brothers against him. Their murderous plot to end the feud fails and, weeks later, Stevenson meets fire with fire.

Jamie "Iceman" Stevenson, from Rutherglen, was apprehended while jogging in Amsterdam around midday on Friday February 4. One source said: “The police will be crawling all over him – his finances, who he meets, where he goes. He’ll find it hard to buy a loaf of bread without the police asking how he paid for it.” Police Scotland said the duo were detained over alleged drugs, serious organised crime and wilful fire-raising offences in Scotland. The National Crime Agency also want to quiz him over 28 million Etizolam “street valium” tablets which were seized at a pill factory in England earlier that year in June 2020. One thing I do know is that most of the drugs in Glasgow and the Central Belt are controlled by this Jamie.

'DANGEROUS INDIVIDUAL'

It would be one of the most significant gangland murders in Scotland for years and signalled an audacious underworld putsch. The unprecedented four-year surveillance offensive - Operation Folklore - launched by elite detectives to bring down Scotland's most serious criminal. It is the latest effort by prosecutors to target the family fortune of Jamie “The Iceman” Stevenson. One of Scotland's most wanted men has been arrested in the Netherlands with another fugitive after a major search operation.

Stevenson faced money-laundering and drug-dealing charges along with eight other suspects, including his wife. McDowall: "No. He just said they'd been friends for quite a while. He said J is the man with the overall power but he's his lieutenant type of thing - his right-hand man. He said they were like brothers." Stevenson's underworld reign ended last year when he was jailed for 13 years for laundering a million pounds of his dirty fortune. However, a deal with the Crown Office allowed him to admit money-laundering in exchange for his wife’s freedom and the drugs charges being dropped.NCA regional head of investigation for Scotland Gerry McLean said: “Stevenson is one of Scotland’s most wanted fugitives. The NCA and Police Scotland will not rest until he is captured. Anyone who is helping him stay on the run will be targeted too.” They had once been allies seizing control of the lucrative drugs trade across swathes of the city's schemes before Jamie's close friendship with Tony McGovern and gangland alliance with his brothers fractured amid betrayal and bloodshed. During the 1990s the McGovernment had mushroomed spectacularly from their Glasgow heartland to build a huge drugs empire from their humble beginnings of extortion, shoplifting and petty violence. The family flourished despite Paul serving a murder sentence and Tommy, although he walked free from a murder trial, being jailed for four years for drugs and firearms offences. Another brother Jamie was shot in the face while drinking in a local pub, leaving him badly scarred. My son was also given the choice and he decided to stay. He's now 22 and I last saw him as a teenager.

He said: "I don't even blame Stevenson. I blame myself for being an idiot. Greed sometimes takes over from need. I had debts but who doesn't? Stevenson’s gang had a multi-million pound turnover when he was targeted by the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency’s Operation Folklore. He insists he had no choice but to co-operate with the Scottish Crime and Drugs Enforcement Agency because Stevenson already believed he was behind the operation being busted. The multi-millionaire mobster put a s10,000 price on his head behind bars and had him stabbed. Loyalties change over time and we urge anyone with information about these men to help us find them.”Tony McGovern, 35. The feared boss of the once-dominant McGovern crime clan was gunned down in 2000 after falling out with best pal and criminal ally Stevenson. The Iceman remains prime suspect for the clinical gangland hit.
