About this deal

You can also silence any false alarms from the phone, to save you having to reach for the button and stop what you’re doing. If you want to buy several Eve alarms, they are easy to sync with each other to ensure effective communication, and mass sound should something be up. The ten-year battery should last for the full replacement deadline period, and as it is a standalone product, you don’t need any fancy smart hubs or controls to get it working, or any of Netatmo’s range of cameras/sensors. But most will still notify your phone if they detect something, and can easily communicate with others in the collection. Many will also give you voice notes, either telling you out loud what they have detected or giving instructions.

As well as changing the battery if need be, your actual alarm will likely need replacing around every ten years. This is the recommended deadline to ensure you still have the most effective system for your home, and it isn’t clogged up with smoke particles. Pros: Good for bedrooms, landings and hallways, and near to kitchens as they aren’t as prone to false alarms from cooking. All of the major manufacturers (Aico, FireAngel and Kidde) make smoke and heat alarms that will work in combination with one another and we have tested pairs of smoke and heat alarms from each of them. For a person to begin feeling the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning, they would need to be exposed to a carbon monoxide level of 50 parts per million (ppm) for eight hours. An alarm’s response time will vary depending on the level of carbon monoxide in the air. For example, an alarm will sound after three and a half hours of continuous exposure at a level of 50ppm, yet will sound after eight minutes of continuous exposure at a level of 400ppm.”

FireAngel is a popular, trusted brand when it comes to smoke alarms. Their products are even recommended and used by over 90% of the UK’s Fire Service. The 880nm infrared wavelength looks for large particles created by slow smouldering fires and a second, 450nm wavelength of light looks for the tiny particles created by fast fires. Essentially, it is giving your home that extra layer of protection before it is too late.

There is no hub or bridge required for it to work, which is perfect if you want a smart smoke alarm without having to install a full system or pay out loads of money for other bits and bobs. It is, however, one of the few smart alarms which will work with HomeKit, so you can still connect it up to other smart small appliances in your home or control it from your phone.

The health effects of CO depend on the concentration and length of exposure (carbon monoxide concentration is measured in parts per million). According to respected CO alarm manufacturer Kidde, “a carbon monoxide detector is a time-weighted alarm that measures the buildup of carbon monoxide in a house. Please note: Alarms are sold individually. Combination kits of 2 x smoke + 1 x heat alarms and also 3 x smoke + 1 heat alarms are available. Battery alarms are much easier to install, however. There is no wiring to get right, and you’re a bit more flexible in terms of positioning. Smart Smoke Detectors Ionisation– More like an electric nose. These are often the less expensive type. They detect physical smoke particles as opposed to seeing the signs of a fire. The particles enter the ionisation chamber through open vents, and the current inside the chamber is changed. This causes the alarm to sound. They are best for placement in landings and hallways, but not too close to kitchens or bathrooms as they are prone to false alarms. The next thing to consider is the temperature range in which the device can effectively operate. Opting for the right range will help to prevent the device from sending wrong signals should the weather in your area change and provide accurate operation. If you live in a moderate climate with cold winters and hot summers, the best decision would be to opt for an adjustable model, allowing for changing/varying this range depending on the weather conditions.

Testing is done manually by a simple press and hold of the large central button. Visual test red light flashes also go off around every 30 or so seconds, so if you feel you’ve gone a little while without seeing the light, you know you have to act. When dangerous levels have previously been detected, but the threat is still there, the peak level memory will give you voice and LED notifications which encourage you to act. If there is a false alarm, and you safely know there is no threat, a hush button will allow you to temporarily silence the alarm.

Should something go wrong, the detector will start the loud 85 dB buzzer and the red LED light as a warning. No matter if you’re asleep or busy with noisy repairs, the ear-piercing sound will definitely get through. This is invaluable in case of real fire, when you have to leave the premises as soon as possible. Note that the warning can only be disabled by normalising the smoke level or releasing the test button. Not as smart as a lot of other smart devices, but they may still come in handy if you like to be kept up to date. So, if you see an alarm which doesn’t have a replacement battery but should last around ten years, this is not something to be worried about as this is usually a good sign the whole unit will need changing anyway. The Nest Protect passed our sealed incense test with flying colours: the smoke alarm went off first, followed by the CO alarm five minutes later; according to the app, the CO level was 414ppm and increasing. We can’t think of a better CO currently alarm on the market, particularly as it also detects smoke.
