About this deal

I’m not a scholar, but yes it’s molon labe, “Come and take them!”, the remark the Spartans sent to Xerxes in response to “Hand over your weapons!” before the Battle of Thermopylae (480BC) – the omega is correct I think. It’s a great T-shirt (notwithstanding the use of the slogan by US gun lobby nutjobs who use crossed assault rifles rather than guitars). Peter – sounds like a beautiful moment. My turn to be grateful, as Dr. D has reminded me of great scenes like this from those Sunday afternoons of yore.

Some other geographical notes, which were too numerous for Roger to possibly note all of. When told that the T3 goes to Barmouth, Mr. B said after an expression of mild astonishment. “It must get there next Monday.” More than one person who wanted an outing for ‘Improv’ had meanwhile chipped in “where the bathing is safe.” I don’t think Chris has ever put up any covers lyrics other than the one that’s on an album (Worried man Blues). You biscuit people speak a different language to everyone else. Fan comments are as fascinating as the lyrics. How did I get on this mailing list?

We saw another familiar move from Nigel: the plectrum on the forehead during the “bins” line in Lark Descending. Having pondered some cycling routes from the past, Nigel wondered what was Llangollen’s rival village. Maybe Bala? He decided to go with Chirk. “I’ve never been to Chirk,” he confessed. “They have a so-called castle, but it’s really just a big house.” He also said he likes Corwen. Just a shame that the vinyl is held up due to Adele’s divorce album using all the pressing capacity. Not entirely sure I’m going to be able to fathom that spreadsheet, so in the event that I can’t, please may I have Bishop’s Cleve? TIA, Moo Really good atmosphere throughout and nice to briefly meet Chris in there – thanks for listening to me bemoaning Terminus’s early LFC exit and advancing the case for Oblong.I’ve only ever bought CDs from Geoff or the merch stall so I guess now it’s just the merch stall*, and that will be the only way, for now, to ensure that the band get the maximum proportion of the dosh (assuming that RM Qualtrough records can’t be arsed/don’t want that image for their band to actually set up an online shop). Well, that was excellent. They played so many songs I thought there wasn’t going to be an encore, then they did one. Great stuff! What adjective did NIgel use before ‘We Built this village’ when he asked the locals “What’s the XXXX village round here?” Presumably searching for that perfect smug, expensive little village to dedicate the song to? We were conveniently close to the venue, only a couple of hundred yards. On our way there we saw Tony, Andrew and Phill, who were troughing at the bistro across the road. Gomez, Howie and Steve H were at large, seemingly between pubs. Brian was also hovering, getting an outdoor coffee where he could keep an eye on the possible development of a queue at the venue door. I paid a visit to the Sweet Daisy ice cream shop. Quality goods on offer there. I had a double cone containing a scoop of honeycomb, and one of chocolate cookie. That’s me one step nearer to a cataract.

Later that day, more Goth was on the agenda. The Webb live just down the road from HMHB, but they were headlining an evening at The Library in Leeds, called Carpe Noctem. The only Biscuit news was that Joy Division Oven Gloves got a spin during the interval. It felt a bit out of place, but it’s always good to hear. I own one and have been known to talk of the beautiful game, although I draw the line at bottled lager.Slipping The Escort – something away fans did in the 1980s. Stoke City. 1985. A fair walk to the train station too. exxo @Richie thanks! I always fear I am missing something, not being from the North and not being a fan of the Fall/Joy Division/Bob Dylan/The Blues. High Ho Wolverhampton, indeed! An all round fine gig. Nice venue, very modern. Roomy, airy, and great sound. A very civilised start and finish time, and a good set list.

Nobody’s yet made that suggestion, @Paul F, though I should have done, as we’re only 8 miles from Scunny).

Not much I can add with regards the sheer brilliance and variety of any live HMHB show. Every Time A Bell Rings seems to get better with every outing. As good a rendition of Look Dad as I’ve heard (and that’s not just because it was my FBL joker and didn’t appear until the encore). Chuffed to hear Jarg Armani too – like most people, I assumed it would be dropped from the set list after its first play in 59 gigs at Bristol last time out. One other thing that seems to have been overlooked – NB sang ‘Ravi Shastri’, rather than ‘Sadi Rani’, during the snippet of Brimful of Asha (now available on YouTube). The HMHB Data Retrieval System has been updated with the Llangollen setlist and links to all the videos I could find. The whole gig’s there (more or less) from McTavish plus 11 from the angles Lee & Jane, Andy (IB) and Julian Cwalinski were watching from. Many thanks to all of you. Always a special day when you hear the news of a news HMHB album… although now have to wait over a month. Even better was pre-t’internet when you just ‘discovered’ a new one in the record shop. It was like taking a new child home. Oh, talking of his grave, just for the sake of completeness, when Nigel dedicated ‘Midnight Mass Murder’ to the Reverend Sarah Jenkins, mentioning the throng coming from The Chestnut Horse, she is the actual vicar of the church where he is buried, and The Chestnut Horse is the actual pub in the village. Just in case Roger hadn’t made that clear. Who was that at the front, shouting “Cold Feet!” when Nigel spotted Robert Bathurst during the intro to ‘Jarg Armani’? Could it have been the same idiot who held a flaming gas lighter aloft during the “Five gas lighters for a pound” line?
