About this deal

Though these are actually free from products (so not accidentally gluten-free at all) I thought I’d include them as they always seem to be mixed in amongst all the muggle products. Unlike in Aldi where they seem to be gluten-free in SOME stores, but not all, the Lidl Monster claws always seem to be a safe option.

Lidl Deluxe 2 Ultimate 6oz Brisket Burgers, 2 Ultimate 6oz Chilli Burgers, The Supreme Burger, 4 Beef Quarter Pounders As of September 2020, all of these products are safe to eat – but please, please let me know if anything changes by leaving a comment below this post. Ok, let’s take a look at the 30 ‘accidentally’ gluten-free products in Tesco! 1. Tesco 6 Onion Bhajis Sensations Poppadoms are made in a factory that also handles: Barley, Wheat and Gluten. Sensations Lime & Coriander Chutney Poppadoms also contain Barley. It is, therefore, safe to conclude that Sensations Poppadoms must be avoided if you are sensitive to gluten or suffer from any form of coeliac disease.

accidentally’ gluten-free products in Lidl – that means that they’re outside the free from aisle, but have no gluten-containing ingredients or ‘may contain’ warning. Best of all, they’re the same price that everyone else pays – no ‘free from premium’ added on! Why? Well, though I’ve gone through great lengths to ensure all these products are safe for you lovely people, you never know when ingredients might change. Plus, some products may look almost identical, but have different ingredients from store to store. You will only need 2 Ingredients– Uncooked Poppadom and Oil of your choice. I prefer using Coconut Oil or Sunflower Oil. The papad made with only urad flour are cooked on a hot tawa until they form bubbles and become crispy. These are suitable for frying too.

The skins didn’t float as well as I hoped. I put the smashed urids in a jar of water, shook them to help separate them from their skins, and then poured off the water and skins. The beans themselves (now “white lentils” without their skins) were kept inside by the lip of the jar when pouring. I repeated the process several times and eventually ended up with a couple of cups of peeled urid, ready for drying and grinding into urid flour. You may notice in the photos that I added cumin seeds directly to the dough the first time I made these. While it’s possible to do it that way, I find it easier to roll out the dough without them. The seeds can be more evenly added to thinner papadums if added later instead. (See that Variations section below.) Drying the wafers In India, poppadoms are traditonally made from scratch and in bulk in individual homes. The method is labour intensive. We are constantly reviewing our recipes and wanted to remove the artificial colours and replace with natural colours. Why? Well, though I’ve gone through great lengths to ensure all these products are safe for you lovely, beautiful people, you never know when ingredients might change.

So though a product can contain barley, if it’s below 20 PPM, it’s still considered gluten-free. This is the case in the UK, but not in Australia, for example. There’s actually LOTS of gluten-free cereal bars that you might not spot. So here’s a few – there’s even more variations than I pictured here! Prepare a copycat Indian curry house or takeaway meal with Indian bread like garlic and coriander naans or rotli.
