A trebuchet is essentially a huge catapult that hurls big boulders and fireballs to destroy your enemies. My stepson and I particularly enjoyed two ghouls on stilts armed with bloody knives and machetes. They did however break character to dance to the music from the stage which was rather entertaining. And the mournful wails of a distraught woman believed to have been walled up with her infant is still heard two centuries after the unspeakable act.

This year

The Bishop of Worcester, was not keen on the idea of a church being in a castle had it removed in 1127. Spectators of the intriguing objects often find they are under an unpleasant sensation of being strangled by an invisible source. The apparition of a grey lady believed to be Moll Bloxham, has been witnessed floating around the castle.

Then, when the Normans invaded England, William the Conqueror took the English crown in the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Two years later, he makes a wooden motte and bailey fort. The castle has seen so many rulers, owners, and restorations so now it’s a combination of all the centuries in one place. You can climb on 14th-century ramparts, walk through 17th-century state rooms, and learn about modern-day conservation in their bird sanctuaries and gardens. The new residents made lots of extensions including the state dining rooms, conservatory, and gardens. The Dead Centre Stage in the courtyard was constantly busy with DJs, bands and dancers on stage at every moment. It felt more like a party atmosphere. And those creepy characters which strolled round seemed even more creepy in the dark. The paranormal activity at Salford Hall Hotel is rife throughout the property. The majority of the ghosts that haunt here all seem to have some connection to a religious theme. One of the most common spectres to be seen at Salford Hall Hotel is probably the ghostly nun. She is usually seen on the lower floor of the hotel and has been reported by both staff members and guests alike! She is thought to be the restless soul of a nun who was brutally murdered here sometime in the 17 th century. It is said castle dungeon is haunted by a malicious spirit of a jailer. He enjoyed brutalizing the prisoners that he used to watch over. He used to scratch and violently hurt the prisoners. The evil ghoul has been seen hiding behind a metal grate and yells at the approaching visitors. Constructed in the 12th century, Coombe Abbey was originally the abbey for a group of Cistercian monks. It passed into the Harington family after the dissolution of monasteries, who sold it to numerous owners until the Craven family took possession in 1622 and held onto it until 1921. Fulke Greville’s singular painted portrait now rests in a dark corner of the castle, competing for attention with wax portraits of Henry VIII and his wives. Despite this, Greville’s spectacular tomb in St Mary’s Church survives as the most evocative and haunting expression of his life as Trophaeum Peccati or ‘Sin’s Trophy’.

Haywood and Greville were involved in a heated argument when Haywood grabbed a knife and viciously stabbed Greville to death. Families can journey through the Haunted Hollows or be entertained by the magical ladies of The Witches’ Tower. This large selection of ghosts indicates a wide variation of haunting phenomena and Ettington Park is no exception to the rule. I went to Merry Hill's new Halloween experience 'The House on the Hill' and wanted to call the Ghostbusters

Penny Pumpkin and Sylvia the Skeleton are all too happy to share a spooky yarn as you weave through the Hollows, where ghouls and gravestones are never far from view. Penny and Sylvia were brilliantly acted and the spooky sets incredibly well thought out. As a family of four, we were certainly spooked - but we also had a really great time. Our favourite mazes were definitely Haunted Hollows, both in the daytime and night. While out of the scare mazes Hunted went down best with my partner and stepson.

We really enjoyed it and went through here twice - and were still scared by different characters each time. For both events, the characters and actors really make it for you. And this year they have two experiences running for some October and Halloween fun. We were invited down to experience both their daytime and evening events, as well as spend a night in the Knight's, I mean, Fright's Village. Due to its intended construction being that of a military base, the castle has seen centuries of warfare and siege, with many bloody deaths occurring within its walls.More atmospheric lighting (or no lighting where the mine is concerned) adds to the tension. And the character are definitely not scared to spook you here. Registered assistance dogs are not permitted to enter The Castle Dungeon due to low lighting, steps throughout, light effects and loud noises Modern reports of the castle’s ghosts still include the sound of phantom footsteps, however they are no longer attributed to Guy but soldiers of the past. Many books also claim Mr Marsh himself experienced the phantom footsteps and not the former bailiff – which is untrue. Because of this, stories of encounters with supernatural entities at the castle numbers in the hundreds. In the 13th century, a stone castle is made in place of a wooden one and by the 14th century, many of the towers and ramparts we see today are built.
