About this deal

Jane Dalgliesh is Adam Dalgiesh's aunt and his sole living relative until her death prior to Devices and Desires. Introduced in Unnatural Causes, she is described as a very private and cerebral person, not unlike Dalgliesh himself. She is fond of bird watching and possesses a cottage in Suffolk which she later sells and buys a converted windmill in Norfolk, which Dalgliesh inherits upon her death. James, P. D. (4 September 2008). Death of an Expert Witness. Faber & Faber. ISBN 978-0-571-24685-4.

His father was the rector of a Norfolk country parish. His sole family relation was his aunt, Jane Dalgliesh, whom he held in high esteem. After her death, Dalgliesh inherits, among other bequests, a converted windmill located on the Norfolk coast. In his lengthy career, he has been quite astute and successful and now heads a squad of CID officers working on only the most sensitive cases. Newly recovered from a serious illness, Dalgliesh is called to the bedside of an elderly priest. Sadly, Father Baddeley is dead when he arrives. His gut tells him something's off, but his recent brush with death makes him wonder if he can trust his own judgment. The Murder Room is James’s most suspenseful, atmospheric novel in years and has no shortage of surprise twists.”— The New York Times Book Review Kate and Daniel interview Ryan, with the Major as his guardian. Ryan says he wanted to talk to Neville about Tally's future should the museum close. But he saw Marie approach and hid, witnessing her give Neville a piece of paper before he exited. Ryan says he's afraid of Marie because she bullied him, and most recently, she’d shown him the trunk in the Murder Room, invited him to get in, and then closed the lid. There's no criminal record for Marie, but they do find her military record from World War II when she was in special ops, but much of it is classified. James Esler (Litvinenko) as Neville Dupayne - a doctor who has a fraught relationship with his siblingsThe Murder Room is a 2003 detective novel and the 12th in the Adam Dalgliesh series by P. D. James. It takes place in London, particularly the Dupayne Museum on the edge of Hampstead Heath in the London Borough of Camden. Max Dupayne was a man obsessed with the inter-years and he began collecting in the 1920s through the 1930s ... "which accounts for some of the pictures; he was able to buy before the artist attracted big money. He also acquired first editions of every major novelist ... [and] the library is pretty valuable now." But what attracted most people to the museum was "the murder room" which is "at least thirty feet long and well lit ... there displayed, illustrated and examined, were the most notorious murder cases of the inter-war years. The impression was of a collage of blood and blank dead faces, of murderers and victims united now in death, staring at nothingness."

A series Dalgliesh starring Bertie Carvel premiered on Acorn TV and Channel 5 in November 2021. It follows Dalgliesh from the 1970s to the present. [31] A second series began airing on Channel 5 in April 2023. [32] I have a vision of myself without this job, disappearing down emotional tunnels, writing myself into despair. I need something to hold me to the world. In the first novel, Dalgliesh is a Detective Chief Inspector. He eventually reaches the rank of Commander in the Metropolitan Police at New Scotland Yard, London. He is an intensely cerebral and private person. He writes poetry, a fact of which his colleagues are fond of reminding him. Several volumes of his poetry have been published. Dalgliesh lives in a flat above the Thames at Queenhithe in the City of London. In the earlier novels he drives a Cooper Bristol, later a Jaguar. He was described as being " tall, dark and handsome" by some women, alluding to Mr. Darcy from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.DalglieshSeason 2 wraps up with the two-part finale, "The Murder Room." Adam Dalgliesh, elusive and enigmatic, is pretty much a mystery in his own right, and since it’s the end of the season, maybe we’ll learn more about his inner life. We know he still grieves his dead wife and child, and DS Kate Miskin is in love with him. There’s been awkwardness between them ever since she cried in his arms after killing a murderer in the last episode. There’s also the issue of whether he will have to choose between his burgeoning writing career and police work. His agent is very keen on expanding his career, particularly when he’s a finalist in a major poetry competition. In every one of her novels James has spared nothing in attending to details. She describes her characters from their eye color to the definition of a cheekbone, illuminating them with her psychological insights and sharing with the reader their elemental personalities. All of this makes them real to readers who are then able to care about them and eager to discover their fate. This gift helps rivet fans to her books and has made her a provocative writer whose approach to mystery writing may be classical in some ways but in others is purely of her own devising. In an interview she said, "I ... discovered that within the detective form I could write a novel that has a moral ambiguity and psychological subtlety like a serious novel. Writing within the constraints isn't in fact inhibiting; it's positively liberating! Many of my books are --- well, they're to do with death --- but they're also to do with love, different aspects of human love." The character's name was chosen in honour of the author's English teacher at Cambridge High School. Years later, she learnt that Miss Dalgliesh's father had in fact been named Adam. The investigation is complicated for Dalgliesh by his love for Emma Lavenham, but their relationship, at a sensitive stage for them both, is continually frustrated by the demands of his job. As step by step he moves closer to the murderer, is the investigation taking him further away from commitment to the woman he loves? Series 2, Episodes 1 & 2: Death of an Expert Witness: Dalgliesh and Miskin investigate the death of scientist Doctor Edmund Lorrimer at Hoggatt's Forensic Laboratory. Dalgliesh soon learns that the late Doctor was not a popular figure. [32] Deborah Riscoe is one of Dalgliesh's romantic interests; they first meet when a murder shakes Riscoe's home in Cover Her Face; their relationship develops over the course of A Mind to Murder. However, because of Dalgliesh's reluctance to commit, Riscoe ends their relationship via a letter at the conclusion of Unnatural Causes, accepting a transfer to the United States of America.Any ranking of today’s best crime writers would surely put Britain’s P.D. James at or near the top. This subtly told, character-driven novel, which emphasizes people over plot, provides, as usual, a richly-rewarding reading experience.” — The San Diego Union-Tribune The Dupayne Museum is an eclectic collection of English memorabilia from the period between World War I and World War II. The murder room of the title refers to a room displaying relics of murders that occurred during this period. The Dupayne Museum is the property of three siblings, who are in the midst of a family row over whether or not to renew the lease on the building that houses the museum. When Neville Dupayne is killed in a manner mirroring one of the murders displayed in the Murder Room, Commander Dalgliesh is called in to investigate. Series 1, Episodes 1 & 2: Shroud for a Nightingale: In January 1975, a student nurse dies during a training demonstration and Dalgliesh (Carvel) is sent to investigate, accompanied by his partner DS Charles Masterson ( Jeremy Irvine). Adam Dalgliesh is in love: “He felt as vulnerable as a boy in love for the first time. . . . Somehow he had to find the courage to risk that rejection, to accept the momentous presumption that Emma might love him” [pp. 28–29]. In The Murder Room, the hero’s personal life impinges, to some degree, on his professional life. How is the love plot—Dalgliesh’s interest in Emma Lavenham and hers in him—incorporated into the mystery plot?

Richard Harrington (Hinterland) as Dr David Rollinson - a forensic biologist who worked on dozens of cases with Lorrimer The body is Neville, identified only by a bag in the car's boot. A search of his apartment reveals only one significant personal item, a note from a lover in his bedside drawer. When Adam interviews his secretary, Andrea Fox ( Robinah Kirondé), she admits that she loves him, although she’s married to someone else. Neville didn’t love her; they just met for occasional sex. She also claims Neville’s reason for the meeting was to try to close the museum. Adam asks Caroline about the lease, and she shrugs it off, saying she figured it would be like every time, where she and Marcus would argue Neville out of it later, and he’d sign.
