The film was originally going to be released on November 4, 2005 but on December 7, 2004, Pixar changed the release date to June 9, 2006. Sweet and Sour Grapes: In the end after giving up the Piston Cup to save The King, Lightning is offered the Dinoco sponsorship by Tex, which was his dream since the beginning. However, he turns down the offer, because the Rust-Eze team gave him his big break and knows there's a lot more to racing than just winning.

Out-Gambitted: Lightning attempts to escape Radiator Springs after Mater removes the parking boot, only to immediately run out of gas after a few miles, because Sally and Sheriff siphoned his gas while he passed out overnight. Befitting its globetrotter plot, the sequel expands the puns to places and things, such as Petrodilly Circus and Big Bentley in London, the Republic of Rearendia, and mentions about the Running of the Bulldozers in Pamplona. Artistic License – Sports: The racing here is most loosely based on NASCAR, and artistic license abounds. When Lightning rides on the wall to pass Rusty Cornfuel and Floyd Mulvihill, he passes Windford Bradford Rutherford, Sage VanDerSpin, and goes to Slider Petrolski. However if you notice, past him are Todd Marcus, Ernie Gearson, and Windford again, as if there were 2 RPM race cars with the same body, but there is not.

Red Is Heroic: Lightning is red and is the main character, but due to being a Jerkass at the start of the film, it's played straighter after he becomes a better person.After the press is alerted of McQueen's whereabouts by Doc Hudson, Lightning is taken to the race, where he is distracted by thinking about the new friends he has made. In the middle of a daydream about them, McQueen spins into the field. When returning to the race, Lightning hears a voice on his microphone, which turns about to be Doc, who, along with many of his other friends, are serving as his pit crew.

Heel–Face Turn: Used and hinted at with Lightning throughout the film, in spite of his "designated hero" status. Examples:Doc challenging Lightning to a race around Willy's Butte and giving him advice afterwards foreshadows Doc's racing past as The Hudson Hornet, which Lightning himself finds out the following day. After the race, Lightning is approached by Weathers, who compliments him on his skill, but warns Lightning of his arrogance in not changing his tires. While The King is giving him advice, McQueen begins to daydream about winning the Dinoco sponsorship and becoming a celebrity. Immediately after, the three cars make their way to the winner's circle, where confetti is launched and the audience cheers. Camera Abuse: At the end of The Stinger with Minny and Van, one of the VW "bugs" flies into the camera lens, leaving a smudge from its hood.
