Family types have changed over time. This is in keeping with changes in society where different types of families are more accepted. Here are some examples: NARRATOR: Some kids have brothers and sisters, and some don't, but that's okay. There are lots of different types of families. Another neat thing about this book is that author and illustrator, Suzanne Lang and Max Lang are family who worked together to write and illustrate this book. They are more typical of post-industrial Western societies, but relatively egalitarian families exist outside of those countries as well. This type of family structure is becoming more and more common across the globe.

Getting to know about all types of families and what non-conventional families are is really important for your kids, as they may be experiencing these situations or know someone who is. Children can really flourish with an awareness of diverse family structures and inclusivity. We at Twinkl believe no one should be made to feel less respected than others and that there is not one 'normal' or ‘ ideal’ family set-up. It’s important that kids feel represented, so this is all about championing every kind of family! Following a conversation between a little bear named Barley and his Mama, this story explores how they came to be a family. Such families involve some serious challenges. It may be that you are in one of those families or perhaps your children have friends that are part of non-traditional family setups. Whether this relates to your situation or not, teaching your child about different types of family can develop empathy and respect. I like how it also talks about the terminology within family such as: cousin, nephew, niece, uncle, aunt, brother, son etc. and how each one is still a apart of your family, no matter what name or label you put onto them. It also talks about how you can make your own family once you grow up and that your new family and old family can all come together and be part of one collective family. A compound family is a type of structure that consists of three or more spouses and their children. It is, of course, characteristic of polygamous societies, but it can also arise in monogamous ones through a second marriage.Show your appreciation: Let your children know how much they mean to you, and how much you appreciate them being part of the family.
