About this deal

Offiziellecharts.de – Thin Lizzy – Live and Dangerous" (in German). GfK Entertainment Charts. Retrieved 27 January 2023. After working in Visconti’s studio, the band went to Paris for a weekend to finish it at Studio Des Dames. According to Visconti, “Doing an ‘in concert’ album this way was cheating, slightly, but the album is about 55% live and the overdubs gave the poorly recorded performances a more uniform sound. This all took a lot more time than we planned, which meant I was again late for Bowie’s album. On the plus side, Live and Dangerous became a big hit… Even U2 claim it as an early influence.” Crew [Thin Lizzy Crew on the tour 'Bad Reputation’ 1977], Technician [Drums - Brian D.] – Gary Lee (7) The best live album ever? It's always funny to see that just about every live-album is said or written to be the best live album in existence. Likewise from this album. I think I have 20 live albums with that predicate. Iain Macaulay: A real classic album. The sound of a party in full swing. A Celtic party with girls, too much drink, a lot of tall tales being told, and the odd fight or two. It’s the ultimate set list from a very original band, playing their songs way beyond the versions they captured in the studio. It’s maybe not their greatest album, but it is the album that presents the definitive sound of the band. The album that keeps the band alive. The album that made their songs live and breath as great pieces of music.

According to Tony Visconti in his book, Bowie, Bolan and the Brooklyn Boy, it was challenging. “I should have realized as soon as the tapes arrived that I was going to be in trouble. The band had recorded several shows in America and Europe, which in itself may not have been a problem. The difficulties started when I found the tape formats were different; some were recorded at the new fashionable 30 ips (inches per second) and the rest at 15 ips. Some used the Dolby A system, some didn’t, some used the AES frequency curve and some with the European CCIR curve. Without getting too technical, this was a nightmare.”

Recorded in London, Toronto and Philadelphia, Live And Dangerous may not have been completely live, but it was still Thin Lizzy at their peak

Crew [Thin Lizzy Crew on the tour 'Bad Reputation’ 1977], Technician [Guitars - Brian R.] – Bill Cayley The band began touring to promote the album, but after a one-off gig in Ibiza, Lynott and Robertson had an acrimonious argument. Robertson subsequently quit Thin Lizzy permanently to form Wild Horses with former Rainbow bassist Jimmy Bain. He was replaced by a returning Gary Moore, who had already been a band member in 1974 and 1977. [21] Billboard Japan Hot Albums – Week of January 25, 2023". Billboard Japan (in Japanese) . Andrew Bramah: Great album. Only let down by the omission of a few songs they played when I saw them. Like Soldier Of Fortune which they opened with with, and Opium Trail and Bad Reputation. Side three of the original vinyl album is a bit generic crowd pleasing. I still think Robertson was a huge natural talent wasted. Record Collector. 29 December 2022 . Retrieved 25 April 2023. Lynott Sykes: As a NWOBHM offspring, I was unfortunately too young to witness the release of this legendary live album at the time, but its iconic cover art intrigued my teenage brain. My introduction to Thin Lizzy was Live/Life, and I didn't know it was their swan song. Since then, not a year has passed without listening to it several times, I can remember every moment of it, so I'll be the only blasphemer here to confess that I'd rather take Live/Life on a desert island, even if L&D sounds better. Brian Carr: I’m a self-professed music junkie that likes hundreds of artists across many musical genres, but glory, you guys may have broken me. I may never listen to anything but Thin Lizzy for the rest of my life. Thompson, Dave. "Thin Lizzy: Still Dangerous: Live at Tower Theatre Philadelphia 1977". AllMusic . Retrieved 17 August 2016. The interviews and video extras were also a gas. The interview section is pretty robust, really enjoyed hearing some of the stories about the making of the Live and Dangerous album release and the band in general. I had some of the TV clips on VHS and was glad to get them pristine on DVD. Crew [Thin Lizzy Crew on the tour 'Bad Reputation’ 1977], Crew [Drivers] – Bill Dunavin, Michael Green (23)

Special was the fact that the band had two lead guitarists. I only knew that from Wishbone Ash (also with such a beautiful live album). It does give the music something extra. Only a pity that the drum solo is not missing from Thin Lizzy either. Well, the drummer is the one who founded the band with Lynott. So he deserves a place of honour. And fortunately, the drum solo is only short. Crew [People who were involved on the tour: 'Johnny The Fox' 1976], Management [Publicity] – Roz Grugeon, Tony BrainsbyTwo nights from the Philadelphia Tower comprise discs five and six – thank goodness Lizzy sets were short and sharp enough to fit a (then-nonexistent) compact disc. Eleven months had elapsed from Hammersmith, and the first Philly gig was considered worthy of ‘official bootleg’ release as 2009’s Still Dangerous. “This show is being recorded for (radio show) King Biscuit,” intones Lynott knowingly as the band launches into Soldier Of Fortune. That Bad Reputation deep cut – as well as five better-known extras including a spine-tingling Still In Love With You not heard before – reminds us we are in what was, for so long, uncharted territory.
