About this deal

There are marginal gains then there is making sure even your tyres are aero-optimised. Enve claims that the SES tyre will add roughly a one-watt aero advantage over competing tyres. The concept is truly for those looking for every bit of optimization possible but that's not the only advantage. In the same way, it makes sense to grab one of the best aero helmets because these are great helmets that happen to be aero, the Enve SES tyres are great tyres first.

The Vittoria Rubino Pro G+ 2.0 is an updated version of the Rubino Pro G+ 1.0 that was released in 2016. Just like nearly all Vittoria G+ tires, the Rubino Pro now comes with the latest 2.0 version of Vittoria's Graphene compound. For the Rubino product line, Vittoria claims to have improved wet grip and mileage of the G+ 2.0 compound when compared to the G+ 1.0 compound. They do not claim reduced rolling resistance for the new Rubino compounds so it'll be interesting to see how it performs in our test. Vittoria includes a table recommending the ideal internal rim width for each tyre size, which states that 25 to 28c tyres should be used on a rim with a 19mm internal width. So we've already made the big step in improvements of Graphene 2.0 over 1.0, but 3.0 and then 4.0 is somewhere down the road, although that also goes along with the development of graphene itself in the industry," said Anton. Where I live in the south west of England, we’ve experienced a range of hostile winter weather so far this year, so it hasn’t been hard to put the Rubino Pros through their paces. Graphene is something that Vittoria has been using in tyres for a few years now. The claimed benefits are that it improves rubber strength, cut and abrasion resistance, which is good news in a tyre that is designed for distance and durability. If the rubber starts to perish, or the tread begins to peel away from the casing in the case of cotton tyres it's probably approaching the end, or if it's worn particularly flat. If you find yourself getting regular punctures it could also be an indication that a new set is required, as sharps have less rubber to penetrate before impacting the air reservoir within. Should I ride 25mm or 28mm? I found myself pushing harder than I would with other road bike tyres when cornering, and you can lean your bike over without worry.

On the flip side, they are heavier and less aerodynamic. It's not a cheap experiment but if you're curious then it's worth trying a larger size. Not long ago we all used 19mm tyres pumped up to 15,000psi, and now you see pros using tyres as wide as 32mm in races, so 28mm tyres likely won't slow you down a great deal if that's your main concern. What tyres to Tour de France riders use? I’ve ridden them on ice, down flooded or thorn-strewn farm lanes, on potholed commuter roads and over rough mountain passes. The 700 x 28c Rubino Pros I tested measured up slightly narrow on my alloy RD30 rims (which have an internal rim width of 19 mm), at 27mm rather than 28mm wide inflated to 40psi. Although the Graphene 2.0 compound is focused more on cut protection, durability and longevity, it still offers ample grip for training in all conditions, helped by that shallow rounded profile. Now, however, the pros are primarily using clinchers setup tubeless, where a big glug of latex sealant replaces the inner tube and aims to self-seal any small holes in the tyre that would otherwise flat a tub or an inner tube. They're not exactly light, either, our tyres weighing in at 376g and 387g, on account of the extra rubber presumably.

This is the fifth-generation Zaffiro Pro, so Vittoria has had plenty of time to refine its recipe over the years. Puncture Force Sharp Needle: Pre-2021, this score was known as 'Puncture Resistance'. On some tires with weakly bonded casing wires, the sharp needle can split the casing wires resulting in a lower score. Tubeless is the norm now for the best gravel bikes and the best gravel tyres. The jury is still out for widths under around 30mm, however. The narrower the tyre the higher the pressure it tends to require, and so the harder the sealant has to work to plug any holes. Road tubeless setups are more prone to spraying goo everywhere, but the benefits are that you can run lower pressures for more grip, and avoid the risks of pinch flats. It can be added to many applications, increasing various performance metrics, and that is why Vittoria says it has used it in these tyres. Apparently the graphene interacts with rubber by filling the space between the rubber molecules, giving better durability for higher mileage and protection against punctures. There should also be an improvement to wet grip too.Puncture Force Blunt Needle: The Blunt needle has a flat tip and won't split the casing wires. To puncture the tire, the blunt needle has to cut the casing wires. Of course, you don’t want that low price to equate to any fragility that could leave you changing a tube by the side of the road. Continual exposure to the UK’s hedge-cutting season, heavy rain washout and a host of newly broken road surfaces have so far failed to breach the Zaffiro Pros, or cause any noticeable wear. NOTE: As of 2021, we've improved the puncture resistance tests and now provide 'Total Puncture Score' as the main puncture resistance indicator.
