About this deal

In my case, it took me about 1h extra to find a reasonable tutorial, follow the steps and understand how to map volumes correctly. I have learned a couple of new things in the process, but at the same time, chances are I’m likely to revisit the same tutorial next time as I don’t expect to use this knowledge any time soon. What one will take from this learning experience is entirely down to them. The first thing I wanted to test was whether a SATA drive—in this case, a Kingston SATA 3 SSD—would run faster connected directly through a SATA controller than it ran connected through a USB 3.0 controller and a UASP-enabled USB 3.0 to SATA enclosure.

Connected through USB 3.0, a SATA SSD is no slouch, but if you want the best possible performance on the Pi, using direct NVMe or SATA SSD storage is the best option. Best for: Touchscreen projects (i.e. Dashing, Smashing, Mycroft AI) 11. TFT Touchscreen Kuman 3.5-inch Display with Protective Case I think the Compute Module 4, with it's built-in Gigabit networking and ability to use one or more PCI Express cards, is the first Raspberry Pi that I would consider 'good' for running a reliable and performant NAS.

With the current pricing landscape, I call it a draw. Unless you have a Raspberry Pi 4 laying around both NAS solutions come at a similar price and offer enough to get you interested. So the only question is: do you trust your skills and take the slightly higher hardware specification of the Raspberry Pi 4 board, or would you rather get a consumer box from Synology, and enjoy the ease of use and broader storage support? Let me know in this Reddit thread as I’m curious to hear your thoughts. After some review and comparison, we chose Geekworm's NASPi Raspberry Pi 4B NAS storage kit. NASPi is a NUC (Next Unit of Computing) style NAS storage kit designed for the latest Raspberry Pi 4B. It consists of three components:

However, it's a great project if you have a Pi lying around and want to see what NAS life is all about. Then, once hooked, you can upgrade to a purpose-made Synology or QNAP model that fits your long-term needs. A magnetic hatch on the top of the case provides access to the GPIO, a colour coded GPIO with all the pin references printed on the case! HATs can be used with the case but you may need to use a header extension to ensure that the board clears the aluminium top of the Argon One M.2. Just next to this GPIO hatch is a small slot useful to route the Pi Camera and official display cables through. What kind of cooling? Some cases come with built-in fans while others use passive cooling by turning the top of the case into a heatsink. Still others leave room for a fan but don’t come with one. Are you planning to use the case in the lounge? Could fan noise become an issue? If so then a passively cooled Pi makes more sense. If you’re buying a case for a Raspberry Pi 4, cooling is critical especially if you are farming Chia or planning to run Windows 11. Obviously, you need a Raspberry Pi for this project, but you also need a power supply, microSD card, a mouse and keyboard, and a monitor for the initial setup. Any of the recent-model Pis should work for this project, and you can buy kits with (almost) everything included. To make sure mdadm automatically configures the RAID array on boot, persist the configuration into the /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf file: # Configure mdadm to start the RAID at boot:

1. Install an Operating System

Although most Raspberry Pi boards, except for the Zero, are compatible with almost any case, there’s a bit of variety. Most Raspberry Pi 3 cases are compatible with Raspberry Pi B+ and Pi 2 boards as well. The primary element dictating which case is best for your Raspberry Pi is form factor. If you have a newer Pi board, you’re usually fine with any case. Which Raspberry Pi you're using largely dictates if a case will work. The Raspberry Pi Zero and Zero W require a different case than the Raspberry Pi 3 B+. Virtually every Pi 2 through Pi 3 B+ case should work for Raspberry Pi 2, 3, and 3 B+ boards. There's also the Raspberry Pi 3 A+ with a smaller footprint. And the introduction of the Raspberry Pi 4 ushered in a hardware refresh that fractured compatibility with Pi 3 B+ cases. But what you plan to use your case for shapes what design and functionality you’ll need. For instance, if you require a hard drive, you’ll want a different case than for a retro gaming console. A Raspberry Pi board array will differ from a single Pi setup. For now, I'm just using a standard Raspberry Pi case with a USB external drive Velcroed to the top, but if you want to get creative, the world is your oyster here. Once you have all your components in hand, it's time to get your NAS up and running. The average user is unlikely to feel the hardware difference. Most of us mere mortals use 1Gbps Ethernet anyway and to fill the maximum capacity of either of the NAS cases – takes a lot of money. Refurbishing – hidden costs Raspberry Pi OS (and indeed, any OS optimized for the Pi currently, like Ubuntu Server for Pi) doesn't include all the standard drivers and kernel modules you might be used to having available on a typical Linux distribution.

Should you consider buying a NAS drive like Synology DS418 or perhaps it’s a good idea to build one yourself using Raspberry Pi 4 and an awesome NAS enclosure designed by Argon40? I have both on my desk right now, so let’s examine this. Running the off command on the SSH connection can also trigger a safe shutdown. Be cautious that we should not use the Linux shutdown command, as that would not power down the X-C1 board. The last stage is to install and configure the Plex Media Server, and then start a network streaming service. Install Media Server In addition, the following pi-temp.sh script, which reads out the GPU and CPU temperatures, is also useful 1 The most obvious limitation is the 3.5″ support limit on Argon Eon, where the case can only fit 2 of these drives (you can fit up to four 2.5″ drives). Synology DS418 has an edge here, but only if your hard drive configuration isn’t flexible. Synology OS vs OMV Open Media Vault Synology The installer will ask if you want to modify smb.conf to use WINS settings from DHCP. Choose Yes and press Enter. Now you edit that configuration file yourself, to share your drive.
