About this deal

My 800g / 2lb loaf tin has dimensions of roughly 25X12X12 CM, holding about 3.3 litres of water. This is a commercial tin and if I take a supermarket pan loaf it fits right in, with a little poking out the top. Bakers usually use pans made of metal. Though preferred, these metal pans are prone to scratches and you may need to wash them by hand. Start with a loaf tin, ideally measuring 21x11cm ( 900 gram / 2lb loaf tin), giving your cake the perfect shape. A sieve for the flour and a silicone spatula or spoon for folding the cake batter.

You will also need to adjust the cooking time if you are changing the cake tin size. If you go up a cake tin size, then it will take longer for the cake to cook all the way to the centre. This means that you will probably need to increase the cooking time by 20% – 25% (10 – 15 minutes for a typical sponge cake). If you go down a cake tin size, then it will take less time for the cake to cook all the way to the centre. This means that you will probably need to reduce the cooking time by 20% – 25%. I prefix these recommendations with “probably”, because the rate at which cake cooks depends on many variables, such as the type of recipe and the weight and colour of the cake tin. Cooking times should only ever be treated as a guide, and should not be slavishly adhered to at the expense of producing an under- or overcooked cake. A fluffy sponge cake is done when the top has a golden crust and feels springy to the touch. A moist cake is done when the sides start to pull away from the cake tin. Mastered the basic traditionally flavoured madeira cake? You can become a domestic goddess and experiment with other varieties. Lemon Glaze

Please note that the table shows how much the cake tin can hold when filled to brim. You should never fill a cake tin to the brim with batter. Batter should only come halfway up the sides of the cake tin (or two-thirds for denser cakes). For example, if the batter for a fluffy Victoria sponge measures 1 litre, then it should be poured into a cake tin with a capacity of 2 litres. Lining the base of your tin with baking paper is particularly helpful if the cake has a wide base and shallow sides, such as a layer cake. Applying a thin layer of grease to the tin before fitting the paper will help it to adhere to the sides so your mixture can be added without disturbing the paper. How big is a 2Lb loaf tin?

If you want to bake bread on a cookie sheet, look for breads that retain their shape (you don’t want overly soft doughs here). Can I use a round cake tin instead of a loaf tin? We’ve added handy fill lines inside so you know exactly how much dough to put in for a tin-filling rise. Oven safe up to 240°C and with excellent heat distribution to ensure your loaf will be cooked through evenly, it also has large handles with sure-grip silicone inserts so getting it in and out of the oven is easy too. And when you’re done, it can go straight in the dishwasher.
