About this deal

It can be used as a HomeKit hub and also provides convenient access to Siri so that you can control your other HomeKit devices with your voice. Siri can recognise up to 6 different family members via the HomePod Mini and provide personalised responses. It’s simple to set up, but you need to remember to set it up in the Meross app before adding it to HomeKit. I managed to install Eve Door & Window on my front door in about 15 minutes, using all four of the risers since the door and its frame are flush. Two months later, the sensor still feels secure in my door, even after a total of (I’m consulting the Eve app here) 432 door opens. Has the VS1 performed well? Yes, it has. This is in no small part due to it being relatively close to one of my Apple TVs, wherever I place it, and this is critical to a well functioning Bluetooth device. If the reach of Bluetooth 5.0 is as good as they say, then for most people you should have no issues. In fact, even my Zigbee devices have been slow to react on occasion, although it’s a lot rarer than Bluetooth, generally speaking. Add the accessory: Using the Home app on your iOS device, add the accessory by scanning the QR code on the sensor or by manually entering the serial number. Once the app detects the accessory, follow the prompts to add it to your HomeKit environment.

As an addendum to this discussion, I wanted to call out some of the most useful third-party tools that can be used to enhance your HomeKit automations. These are most definitely power user tools, so will take some learning and configuration, and possibly additional hardware as well. In many cases, though, you’ll find they add a lot of utility that can solve some of the deficiencies in HomeKit. I could turn them on when the door opens, but that would turn on all the lights when I’m going into the house as well, which is pointless. Instead, I pair that with the motion sensor so it only turns them on when I open the door from the inside, along with a Turn Off time out. Open door alerts For A Sensor Detects Something, you’ll be able to select sensors that report specific events like open/closed, motion/no motion, as well as certain sensors that have values, like temperature or light level. For other sensor types you’ll need to use a third-party app. Here’s how to create HomeKit sensor triggers in third party apps. I prefer using smart bulbs as they are the cheapest and easiest option, although they render your existing light switches useless. Alternatively, smart switches give you access to both physical switches and smart features, but you won’t have access to coloured bulbs.Aqara includes the Matter code in the instruction manual, so you’ll want to make sure you either create a digital copy of it or keep the original for safekeeping. Even running the iOS 17 developer beta, it was up and running in just a couple of minutes. Aqara ships the sensor with a battery tab, and you’ll want to pull it out before trying to add it to HomeKit. Wrap up on Aqara Matter enabled door sensor GARDENA smart Gateway — supports GARDENA smart Irrigation Control, Power Adapter, Sensor, and Water Control We can do this in HomeKit by creating multiple automations off the same trigger and use the conditions to determine which path to take. The toggle switch example uses this approach in a simple way, but you can build up the conditions to make it “smarter”.

Scheduled Time, which is limited to Time of Day and Day of Week rather than allowing specific dates. All of the apps expose the same functionality, either being able to enter a specific time of day (hour and minute) as well as the days of the week that it will trigger, or a Sunrise/Sunset value along with an offset time before or after that. This allows HomeKit to calculate the correct trigger time based on your location and time of year. The Meross Smart Plug (HomeKit Edition) can be used to turn any device smart. It’s 13amp which makes it suitable for any device up to 2990W in the UK. The bottom line is that if your VS1 sensor(s) are close enough to your Apple TV or HomePod, you’re going to get reasonably comparable performance to Zigbee for much of the time, although as already mentioned, Bluetooth does seem to hibernate after a period of inactivity, and can be slow to initially respond, which isn’t great if you’re relying on a porch light to come on when you open a door. Pull the battery tab: The sensor is powered by a CR2450, and you’ll want to pull the battery tab out of the large part of the sensor to activate it.The Homepod Mini might be small in size, but it delivers crisp audio that’s perfect for day-to-day listening, and with 360-degree sound, it fills the room. You can also pair two HomePod Mini’s for left-right audio. Besides monitoring the status of Eve Door & Window, the Eve app also lets you add the sensor to a wide variety of automations. For example, the sensor could trigger a lighting scene and tee up your favorite music playlist when you walk in the door, and you could set the automation so it would only run, say, on weekday evenings, right around when you typically get home from work. Another option would be to make the sensor dial down your air conditioning or heating when a window is opened, or to change the color of a light to warn you that the sensor had been tripped. Each automation allows you to add one or more triggers, conditions, and resulting scenes. With the Abode Mini Door/Window Sensor, you can get immediate alerts, trigger your alarm, and get notified when a door or window is opened. If you’ve got a motorised garage door, it’s cheap and simple to give Siri access with a smart garage door controller. These devices can be retrofitted to existing garage door systems so that you can simply say “Hey Siri, open my garage” for access.

Choose an accessory automation: You’ll now want to select “do you want this trigger to occur when it opens or closes” and based on either a time or people arriving/leaving. The Keurig K-Mini single serve coffee maker is a stylish coffee maker that looks good in any kitchen or break room. It suits smaller spaces particularly well, as it’s less than five inches wide. Despite its smaller size, it’s still fully capable. It can brew any cup size between 6-12 ounces, and it’s able to brew coffee, tea, cocoa, and even iced beverages. The Keurig K-Mini single serve coffee maker has easy cord storage for transport and tidying up your countertop after use, and an energy efficiency feature turns the coffee maker off automatically 90 seconds after your last brew. Keep in mind that you can’t yet watch Freeview on an Apple TV, but you’ll be able to install broadcaster apps such as BBC iPlayer to watch live TV channels. The device is compatible with the smart home. Google Assistant and Alexa can provide you with the status of your doors and windows, and Alexa can call out when one opens. To receive notifications for your HomeKit and Matter accessories when you're not at home, set up a home hub.

When the wind switch turns on, turn off the fountain (the switch will reset after whatever delay you set on it)
