About this deal

The Baroness traces Nica's extraordinary, thrilling journey – from England's stately homes to the battlefields of Africa, passing under the shadow of the Holocaust, and finally to the creative ferment of the New York jazz scene. Hannah Rothschild's search to solve the mystery of her rebellious great aunt draws on their long friendship and years of meticulous research and interviews. It is part musical odyssey, part dazzling love story. Art also plays a major role in the narrative. Hannah Rothschild has had a long association with the art world and served five years as the Chair of Trustees of the National Gallery and so she writes about art from a strong foundation. A PEOPLE BEST NEW BOOK • An outlandish comedy of morals and manners about a highborn British family of outrageous characters, by the acclaimed author of The Improbability of Love and House of Trelawney •“A joy to read.”— Vogue At first glance Thelonious (Monk) and Pannonica (Rothschild) might seem to have nothing in common. Yet as Hannah Rothschild shows in this tender memoir, the symmetries of their lives ran far deeper.' Kathryn Hughes, The Mail on Sunday

Rothschild’s] brilliant new novel, High Time, is pure escapist satire. Once again set in the world of high art as well as high finance—both of which she lampoons with comic aplomb—the book reads like a thrilling fairground ride version of Downtown Abbey.” The Baroness is a biography of Hannah Rothschild great-aunt, Pannonica Rothschild aka Nica the youngest of four children in her family. For Pannonica, being a scion of the Rothschild family meant living a life of luxury and life was lonely for the free-spirited woman, and the only escape was marriage. In 2020 I read Hannah Rothschild’s delightful modern comedy of manners, ‘House of Trelawney’ and was pleased to discover that she had recently published a sequel, ‘High Time’. A young woman named Annie buys the Improbability of Love art badly discolored by dirt, grease and the dirt of the decades from a junk store. Reading the story, we get to learn a lot about the restoration of the art and the scientific techniques used to determine its authenticity. All these details are fascinating. We also get to learn that Annie is a chef who’s recovering from a failed love relationship. There is Jesse, the man who falls in love with Annie and helps her in her quest to discover the origin of the work. At first, Annie is not romantically interested in Jesse, but through the story, she gradually discovers his strengths.Hannah’s features and interviews appear in The Telegraph, The Times (London), The New York Times and Vogue. Her documentaries have been shown on the BBC, HBO and at international film festivals. She has lectured on art, film and philanthropy at the Getty, the Royal Academy of Arts and at the Hay Festival. From August 2015 to October 2019 she was the first female Chair of the Board of Trustees of the National Gallery in London. Hannah Rothschild Steps Down As Chair of Trustees at London's National Gallery", Art Forum, 20 June 2019. High Time does not shy away from serious issues, especially the repercussions of business, but it is also a fun, fast-paced and, God forbid, funny novel. . . . With its sharp wit and multi-generational cast of charming but quirky relatives, Hannah’s novels stray far closer to the likes of Nancy Mitford in its tone and style.” Rothschild's) brilliant new novel, High Time, is pure escapist satire. Once again set in the world of high art as well as high finance – both of which she lampoons with comic aplomb – the book reads like a thrilling fairground ride version of Downton Abbey.' - Independent The story also introduces other characters- some who are more convincing than other with each representing different aspect of the art business. The indigent British man is trying to stay afloat, a fashion advisor, and experts who dedicate their lives to studying artists. Tension rise when the main character, Annie gets entangled in a world of a diabolical plot.

Barber, Lynn (3 February 2020). "Hannah Rothschild on how she juggles half a dozen jobs: 'I try to treat my writing a bit like a love affair' ". The Daily Telegraph . Retrieved 27 May 2020. Hurt and betrayed, she's determined to fight for herself and her daughter – but can she do it without enlisting the help of her beloved, deeply eccentric but estranged family? This is a fascinating and fun romp of aristocracy hitting hard times and creatively working through the financial crash of 2008. This modern-day Downton Abbey, full of family dysfunction and love, is just as addictive as the TV series.' Beth Gibbs, Library JournalNica met and married Baron Jules, and the couple had five children. She traveled with her husband overseas during the war. Nica loved listening to music, and it was during her travels in 1950’s she heard a sound (jazz music by a Monk) that “literally” called her- she was happy. This canny comedy of manners straddles the worlds of high finance and the crumbling aristocracy, branding love, revenge and market meltdown. Waspish yet generous hearted it delights from start to finish.' Mail on Sunday
