DJI Avata only supports downward obstacle sensing when used with DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 or DJI Motion Controller in N Mode or S Mode. Often the size of the sensor is overkill for video capture, and only a small portion of it is used to achieve the maximum 4K resolution. What DJI did with the Avata is use some of that extra additional capture to add a new feature, HorizonSteady. There are multiple ways to buy the DJI Avata FPV, though which of these you need depends on if you own the original FPV hardware and what Goggles you'd like to use it with. One slightly surprising feature if the DJI Avata is that it's substantially slower than its DJI FPV predecessor. DJI Goggles 2 weigh only 290 g, which is 30% lighter than DJI FPV Goggles V2, making it easier to carry anywhere and more suitable for long-term use. The soft foam padding fits well with your face to greatly reduce light leakage.
The critical issue here is that this type of flying is a major departure from flying camera drones, and not all pilots will instantly enjoy it. If you discover that FPV flying isn’t for you, then this could be a very expensive mistake. The max flight speed is subject to dynamic local restrictions. Please abide by local laws and regulations when flying. Similarly, all the modes are a little slower than its predecessor, with 'Normal' mode only offering 8m/s and sport mode 14m/s. And, climbing is capped at just 6m/s irrespective of mode, where the FPV had no limit on climb rate in manual mode and 15m/s in Sport. Why DJI called these the Goggles 2 when they already have a Goggles V2 is beyond us, but it seems destined to confuse DJI’s customers. Another useful feature is that the Avata has 20GB of internal storage, so forgetting to bring storage isn’t a catastrophe. You can set this space to be used even if you do insert a microSD card to provide some resilience against a card error ruining your best shot.

The game-changing feature of the DJI Goggles 2 is its built-in adjustable diopters, allowing pilots to adjust the vision settings between 2.0 D to -8.0 D. These diopters make the Goggles 2 accessible to more pilots, especially those with minor vision impairments. One complaint I have about the Motion Controller is the position of the Record button. It's on the left side, essentially under where your thumb rests, and reacts to glancing presses. It's very easy to bump while flying. The FPV goggles show a tally icon during recordings, but it's easy to miss when you're concentrating on flying fast and avoiding crashes. The Avata has a setting to automatically record while it's flying, but even with that on, an accidental tap of the Record button ends recording. DJI should offer an option to disable the Record button altogether to prevent recording interruptions.

That’s a big difference if you are interested in flying fast, though not necessarily a bad thing if you’re learning FPV flying. Tested with a production model DJI Avata in a controlled environment. Actual experience may vary depending on the environment, usage, and firmware version.
This is a little clunky and the Motion Controller isn’t suitable for flying through a building or tight spaces. It’s fun in big open spaces where the Avata can achieve a distinct aircraft style of flying, but it’s awkward if you are in restricted airspace. So, ultimately it comes down to one key factor: which pair of DJI FPV Goggles would you prefer to fly with? Let’s break down the key unique features of these two headsets. Tested in an outdoor open environment without interference. Video transmission latency varies with different goggles. DJI FPV Goggles V2 can reach a video transmission of up to 810p. When using DJI FPV Goggles V2 with the 810p/120fps video transmission, the lowest video transmission latency is less than 28 ms. When using the standard DJI Motion Controller in one of the combos, you can perform motion control on the aircraft. That is, you can turn your wrist to control the direction of flight, and the aircraft will fly wherever you point to. You can also press the accelerator to control the speed of flying forward, or release the accelerator to let the aircraft hover in place. The control is intuitive and easy-to-learn.
FAA regulations call for drone pilots to keep the aircraft within line of sight, another potential issue with the Avata. I had a spotter at my side for test flights, someone who could keep an eye on the drone and let me know if I needed to make an emergency stop or landing. The Avata also includes an ADS-B AirSense transponder; if you're flying above the treetops, the drone warns you when other aircraft are nearby. The key difference between the DJI Avata Fly Smart Combo and the Pro-View Combo is the type of goggles they come with.
