About this deal

You have 8 ohm speakers. The Denon 3700 is measured to make up to 114 watts into 8 ohms before distortion increases. With the 9.2-channel 8K AV amplifier “AVR-X3700H”, Denon promises entertainment at the highest level. The power of 180 watts per channel admittedly promises an impressive performance. Using just one channel, with increasing volume, speech and other sounds become a garbled mess sooner.

Voice control through Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri-enabled devices remains, as well as all the wireless standards for music found in the previous model, including AirPlay 2, HEOS, Spotify and Tidal. It has similar features to the Onkyo receiver, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support, 4K HDR pass-through, and Google Chromecast and AirPlay 2 compatibility. However, it does have built-in WiFi and Bluetooth support. So, which one should you choose? The Denon AVR-X3700H is an all in all very convincing AV amplifier with an incredibly good price-performance ratio. The equipment is very extensive and the 8K compatibility, as well as the 8K upscaling, have to be mentioned here first and foremost. Unfortunately, you have to do without Auro-3D completely. The sound is mega and the clarity is excellent. In summary, the Denon AVR-X3700H delivers 8K video, 9 power amplifiers, great 3D sound, and plenty of power, so brand lovers will not be disappointed. If you want more HDMI 2.1 inputs for your many elite and varied consoles, you should take a look at the Yamaha RX-V6A, which has three HDMI 2.1 inputs instead of the Denon's one. Award-winning Denon Setup Assistant and graphical user interface: Easy and intuitive out-of-box setup experience. There is a lot of anticipation for this review as I gave its last year mode, the AVR-X3600H my best rating of any AVR tested. Alas, I reviewed that late in its design cycle so availability is very poor. Hope is that this replacement unit doesn't regress in measured performance while adding features. So let's get into that. The i/p scaler function controls the rest of the available functions. So, if you turn it off, you have the next closest mode to HDMI bypass, as all other processing (including resolution scaling, and progressive/interlaced processing) will be disabled. This is the mode I ended up choosing for the Denon AVR-X3700H.

Audyssey MultEQ XT32, Dynamic Volume, Dynamic EQ, LFC and Sub EQ HT: Delivers the ultimate equalization for your individual room including subwoofer EQ. Even Denon’s integration of that Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization tech is impressive. While it doesn’t compare to using dedicated height speakers, there is an opening of the soundstage. Without losing too much focus – one of the company’s fortes across its range of AV amps – the AVR-X3600H gives the impression of a more three-dimensional soundfield. We’d opt for letting the amp concentrate on the physical channels you have tethered to it, but with certain discs, we can imagine the virtual Atmos working well. VerdictThe X3700H has seven HDMI inputs, and three HDMI outputs, all of which can handle 4K/60Hz, HDR10, HLG, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. One of the inputs and one of the outputs also support the latest HDMI 2.1 specs, such as 8K/60Hz, 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM, and eARC.

For video support, the Denon AVR-X3700H has 7 HDMI inputs and 3 HDMI outputs (one of which is tied to zone 2) and supports all the latest signal formats, including eARC, HDCP 2.3, resolution up to 4K/120* and 8k/60*, 3D, and BT.2020 pass-through, and HDR support through HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision. Another thing to keep in mind is that the Onkyo TX-NR797 offers slightly more power than the Denon AVR-X3700H. This means that it can handle more demanding speaker setups without issue. If you want to make sure your receiver can handle anything you throw at it, then the Onkyo TX-NR797 may be a better option. I'm not saying its perfect, but I'd estimate (with properly designed good speakers with normal impedance dips) in the worst case, passive bi-amping with the 3700 is as good as adding 25 watts. Depending on the content and a speaker's crossover points and impedance curve, in the best case it could be like adding over 50.

The company was founded in 1946 as the Osaka-based Owada Radio Shop. It eventually became the Tokyo-based Onkyo Corporation we know today. With bi amping, the explosion will be slightly quieter with all simultaneous sounds unaffected (speech etc is still clear). Using just one channel, speech and other sounds become a garbled mess SOONER Our fixed speaker setup in the test room is a Procella THX system in 7.1 configuration, with a pair of ceiling-mounted Martin Logan SLM for Atmos content. A 7.1.2 setup is the starting point for the test, and I have not tested with e.g. 5.1.4 where the extra rear channels are replaced with a couple of extra ceiling channels instead. Even slower songs, such as this, come across with a sense of momentum. Obviously, it can’t compete musically with even a budget stereo amplifier but, all the same, our listening time with this AVR is so enjoyable that it’s difficult to tear ourselves away long enough to start telling you how much we like this receiver. Verdict After dialing in some EQ settings for optimal conditions, the Denon AVR-X3700H was a solid performer for audio. The surround sound was deep and rich. The bass response from the LFE channel was a bit larger than the life with the volume at moderate levels.

It also has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless streaming from your favorite apps and devices. If you’re looking for an AV receiver that can handle just about anything you throw at it, the Denon X3700H is a great option. It’s got plenty of power to drive even the most demanding home theater setups, and it supports all the latest audio and video standards. If surround sound is of utmost importance, it’s doubly important to make sure your intended speaker configuration can be driven by a receiver. It is absolutely vital to research all the components of your home theater setup and make sure that they can work in harmony. The result is an AVR-X3600H that is sneaking up on its bigger sibling in terms of performance and connectivity. If you have a grand to spend on an AV receiver, Denon should still be at the top of your list. There’s a lot to like about both the Onkyo TX-NR797 and the Denon AVR-X3700H. They’re both 7.2 channel receivers with support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, they have similar power output, and they offer a wealth of features for customizing your home theater experience. So which one should you buy? The latest in video compatibility: The latest HDR format support including HDR10, HDR10+ (New in 2020), HLG, Dolby Vision, as well as Dynamic HDR (New in 2020) to provide the greatest picture quality for brightness, clarity and contrast.

A not entirely unimportant innovation or improvement is the disabling of internal power amplifiers. This allows the AVR-X3700H to be used as a preamplifier for external power amplifiers. As usual with Denon, the AVR-X3700H has another speaker configuration for alternative storage of speaker setups. Unfortunately, neither FM nor DAB+ is available, which is why this device can only act as an amplifier and not as a receiver. Denon AVR-X3700H Review: Streaming & Multimedia My observation so far is, Denon movie experience is way better than my previous Yamaha RX-A1020 but for music(stereo), I feel Yamaha is better. It remains engaging at low volumes, too, which will please the neighbours once you’ve had enough of turning it right up and wondering at how its composure remains intact. They also benefit from having the media tailored to their individual tastes, which can come in handy for people deep into harder-to-stream selections. Amazing audio built on 110-years of innovation: Denon is the defining audio company of Japan. Founded in 1910, we enable the moments that matter through the relentless pursuit of quality, innovation and audio performance.
