About this deal

Lace Music Products® is proud to announce the launch new Electric Cigar Box Guitar models for 2021! I used a combination of a band saw, dremel, and power sander to shape my nut and saddle. Pull out a guitar or look around at ukulele's to get an idea of what you need. An important idea here is action - that is, the height of the strings above the frets. It is hard to get a good idea of the action while everything is still loose and not put together, so leave cutting the grooves till later.

once it's cut out shape it like crazy with sandpaper/files or whatever you prefer to use to get it feeling nice in your hand. be careful not to round over the edge where the fretboard will be glued on. The cigar box guitar (or CBG) is probably the most commonly known roots instrument, and was the original inspiration for the formation of Salvage Sounds. Thanks to the work of Shane Speal and the Cigar Box Nation movement, more and more people are coming to know of these amazing instruments, full of character and stories to tell. A short scale modification to the 3-String Pro Plans that will bring your sounds into the mandolin and ukulele range. Features demo video. These plans have been archived here and re-typed out in an easy-to-read format. Straight out of a 1923 edition of Popular Mechanics. Another advantage of a Salvage Sounds cigar box guitar is the proportion of the instruments. The most common “scale length” of cigar box guitars elsewhere is 25 inches (this being the string length between the nut and the bridge upon which the fret spacing is based). Our cigar box guitars instead have a comfortable 22.5 inch scale length (inspired by the original Fender Duo-Sonic guitars of the 1950s).I wanted a ukulele and didn't want to spend too much money. My uncle happened to have some extra cigar boxes from someone who was throwing them out and one seemed like it would be a good size for a soprano ukulele, so I thought I would give making a cigar box ukulele a shot.

When I actually put the strings on at the very end, I found it easiest just to tie a knot and string it through the bridge, so you can see the knotted ends of the strings when you look at the ukulele. You may want to modify this design if that is not what you want. A variety of bridge designs are possible, so look around if you are interested. The original and best! That's no empty boast - I've pioneered the making of cigar box guitars in the UK. I have made and sold over 2000 of them, and have been featured in the UK music press, and on UK & European TV & radio. New for 2021, both models, and now the rest of our lineup feature an adjustable truss rod in both the 3 & 4 string variants. All Lace® Cigar Box Guitar models are shipped with an extra set of Steve Arvey Signature Cigar Box Guitar Strings. Video lesson on how to build a heavy metal one-string shovel guitar, as played by Youtube sensation, Rob Scallon. We have two cigar box guitar models: The classic “f-hole” with its ornate and instantly recognisable sound-hole shape. And an alternative design built using beautifully intricate paper-covered boxes, with dual metal sound-hole covers (that you may recognise as being a pair of sink strainers!) Joshua Gayou's 179 pg guide covering the complete design and construction of a top end solid body electric cigar box guitar. The one-string fiddle was a staple of the Vaudeville circuit in the late 1800's and early 1900's. In fact, Larry Fine of the Three Stooges was a master of the Vaudeville fiddle.

For step by step instructions on how to restring your instrument, search online for tutorials. Be aware that for a couple of days the strings will not stay in tune very well. The positions of the frets depends on the scale length of the ukulele. The plans posted here (uke2, see below) are for a concert size. For fret position measurements, search "fret calculator" in google or go here . For a concert size I used a 15" scale length with 17 frets. Washboard virtuoso, Ronn Benway shows how to set up your own musical washboard. This episode of Cigar Box Nation TV includes design, layout and percussion choices.

A bridge support can also be applied beneath where the bridge will be. This is optional, but it seemed like a good idea. I ended up gluing the bridge to the box, but it is possible to screw it in, in which case a good bridge support is crucial. I cut the bridge support so it fit snugly inside the X brace. I have been in the joinery business for over 30 years and I also own a successful kitchen business with my brother. I made cigar box guitars more as a hobby but in recent times I have had more and more enquiries to make one of a kind models. With my vast experience in the joinery field and a fully loaded workshop I can complete most builds within a four/ six week period. First, plane the boards. They must be perfectly flat or they will not glue evenly. Plane the boards on the concave side until flat (watch your fingers!). Mark the flat side of the board. Then turn the boards 90 degrees and plane a thin edge - again, be careful with those fingers - until it is flat. Mark the planed edge. It is important that you have flat edges to measure from when cutting boards down to size on the tablesaw.
