About this deal

At first, Miyazaki wanted to make a film about a "flying Treasure Island", and he borrowed the name "Laputa" from Swift's book. He probably shouldn't have. "Laputa" is actually a (really) bad word in Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: Apparently, the best a trained army can do against an unarmed boy is slightly graze his cheek. Break His Heart to Save Him: Sheeta makes a deal with Muska to free Pazu. It involves telling Pazu to return to his home town and forget about her, which he reluctantly does. Dola discusses this later.

The General in the Japanese version definitely fits this trope. Ichiro Nagai was practically the go-to guy for hammy villains in his day. Armies Are Evil: The army is a ruthless antagonist in the movie. Although still not as bad as Muska. Below the tree is the dome that covers its roots. There is the Volculite crystal (Japanese 黒い石, kuroi ishi ), which lifts Laputa into the air. The crystal stands in a pond, which is crossed by the roots of the tree. A tablet with cuneiform writing is attached to the crystal. Muska goes with Sheeta's stone on the board and can control so the individual modules. [2]Each robot's arms and legs are extensible, and can be operated independently of each other. A row of concealed flaps is attached to each arm, giving the robots the abilities to fly and glide. They are also very hefty, as they can effortlessly scale up vertical walls and surfaces. Despite the absence of visible ears, they can indeed hear sound, as their eyes pulse red when they detect noises. From the right eye, they can fire a destructive laser of variable force; at peak strength, this laser can melt through solid wood and steel. From the left eye, they can fire smaller laser which don't explode but can easily slice through metals. Rose, Steve (November 9, 2016). Freeze-Frame Bonus: Near the end of the movie when Laputa starts to fall apart, if you pause at the right time you will actually see Muska in the debris falling to his death. Mark Hamill received critical praise for his performance of Muska in the 2003 English dub. [4] Character name What Measure Is a Mook?: The entire crew of the Goliath are wiped out in a series of catastrophes. Nobody seems to care. Probably not without reason, though. Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Muska's "Goodbye! Enjoy the ride!" quip in the Disney dub before dropping the soldiers to their deaths. Several notable artists in the anime and manga industries have cited Laputa as a major influence on their works. Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (1990), by Neon Genesis Evangelion director Hideaki Anno, is noted for its similarities in premise with Laputa; Anno had previously worked with Miyazaki on the production of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and has stated that Nadia was based in part on one of Miyazaki's concepts. [105] D.Gray-man (2004) author Katsura Hoshino was moved to pursue a career in animation after watching the film, ultimately becoming a manga artist. [106] Ghost in the Shell (1995) director Mamoru Oshii [107] and Your Name (2016) director Makoto Shinkai named Laputa among their favorite animations. [108] Additionally, VanderMeer and Chambers argue that Laputa forms the stylistic foundation for several of Miyazaki's later films, including Porco Rosso (1992) and Howl's Moving Castle (2004). [54] a b The company responsible for producing the 1988 dub of Laputa is yet undetermined. This dub is sometimes referred to as the "Streamline dub", leading many to believe it was produced by Streamline Pictures themselves. [66] Others attribute the dub to a company called "Magnum". [67] However, Streamline representatives have repeatedly denied any knowledge of the dub's production. Streamline co-founder Carl Macek stated that they merely distributed the dub, and that it was provided to them by Tokuma Shoten, who in turn had it outsourced to an unnamed company in Hollywood. [68]The Laputian robot's "eyes" are the muzzles of two of them: a slashing laser and a Destructo-Beam. It's worth noting that the lasers used by the robots follow a realistic theory about the capability of laser weapons: they don't have a maximum range and they travel near-instantly. This is most clearly demonstrated when Sheeta throws off the damaged Fortress robot's aim and the beam shoots off across the countryside for miles before it can cut the beam to avoid risking harm to Sheeta.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky – Rescoring interview". Nausicaa.net. July 14, 1999. Archived from the original on November 2, 2020 . Retrieved March 11, 2023. Evil Laugh: Muska, when he takes control of Laputa's power and uses it to dispose of the General and his army and their almighty battleship. Vortex Barrier: One of the indicators (and obstacles) of Laputa's presence are two contra-rotating vortices of air. The presence of the Heart of Laputa opens a path through them, after which, they seemingly dissipate entirely.

The floating island lies in a cloudscape, which is also known as the dragon's cave (Japanese 龍 の 巣, ryuu no su ). The cloud masses draw nearby flying machines towards them. If the machine is close enough to the vortex, lightning bolts in the form of kites flash around the machine and then form columns to show the way to the landing platform. [6] Campfire Character Exploration: Sheeta reveals some of her past to Pazu while they relax and eat by the light of his oil lamp in a cave. Power Glows: Aetherium (Volucite), the Applied Phlebotinum of the story, glows brightly whenever its active. The Spell of Destruction at the end caused a glow bright enough to leave Muska blind. These Robots are mechanical soldiers created by the inhabitants of the artificial floating country of Laputa. Non-Laputan science cannot even identify the materials that the Robots are made of. Laputa has influenced numerous video games, particularly in Japan, with its success leading to a wave of steampunk video games. [56] Game designer Hironobu Sakaguchi cited Laputa as an inspiration behind his Final Fantasy video game series, particularly citing it as an influence on the series' airships. [112] Laputa also influenced the airships in the Mario and Civilization franchises. [56] The Iron Golem from Minecraft (2011) takes inspiration from the robots in the film. [113] Several games from The Legend of Zelda series are noted to have been influenced by Laputa, particularly Tears of the Kingdom (2023), which features a flying castle and several thematic parallels with the film.
