About this deal

Tisch Drama Alumna Bernadette Banner Creates Online Business Studying Historical Dress". New York University. 27 February 2020. Archived from the original on 29 November 2020 . Retrieved 29 November 2020. May I ask why you think BB will postpone promoting her book? It's in her interests to get as many sales as possible. Bernadette Banner is a filmmaker and dress historian, best known for her YouTube channel documenting the exploration, reconstruction and interpretation of historical dress. Her work focuses on English and American dress predating the widespread use of the electric sewing machine, with a particular focus in the years of dress between 1890 - 1914; all reconstruction work is done by hand or with the use of period authentic machinery.

Or she's just been so aloof and hard to be friends with nobody actually really knew her well enough to say what she was like. She strikes me as someone who doesn't make friends easily - especially with how much of a class 5 clinger she was to Cathy. Mason, Jessica (2 October 2020). "YouTuber Breaks Down Five Movies That Nailed Their Historical Costumes". The Mary Sue. Archived from the original on 4 November 2020 . Retrieved 13 December 2020. I feel bad for being so nosey, especially when someone has made the effort to be so private, but surely she must know that the mysteries she presents to the viewer incites prying behaviour? It's pretty on par with Americans. The US is a relatively "new" country (even though, you know, it was already settled pre colonization). In other countries, they reuse things and use things, even if they're old. In America, rather than upkeep it, we'll just demolish it, donate it, or throw it out and get something new or more convenient.

Same goes for BB's expert knowledge. Compared to a random person on the street with zero sewing/history knowledge she's an expert, that's what they call her. The same thing is happening to Rachel when people get irritated that she calls herself a beginner when she has plenty sewing projects under her belt. But in reality she is (no shade on Rachel, love her regardless). Banner studied in the Design and Production Studio at Tisch School of the Arts. After that, she did an internship for Tony Award-winning costume designer Jenny Tiramani at the School of Historical Dress in London. [13] She formerly worked as a costume assistant for Broadway, and later on a parody preview video of the Broadway musical Frozen. [3] A significant area investigated by Banner has been the accuracy in reproductions of historical clothing, for example in films like Little Women (2019) and Beauty and the Beast (2017). [8] In addition, she has also been featured by Glamour as commentary for an analysis of Mary Poppins' dressing. [9] At first I thought she was a breath of fresh air and I really liked watching her sewing projects and research videos. And still do when she puts them up! But I also started to feel like she's snobby unfortunately. In 2019, a 15th-century-inspired gown Banner made was poorly copied and sold by an online merchant using Banner's photo [10] in the sales listing. Banner bought the dress and made a public video in which she criticized its poor construction. [11]

At best, it's hypocrisy. At worst, it's her intentionally joking about a genocide and the victims, misrepresenting an oppressed people, etc so she could joke about the funny hat. Oh, and she's making money off it.I have very mixed feelings about her. On the one hand, there's no denying her talent. I've watched her videos on corset making several times, and I love that one about adapting an 18th century dress into a modern summer dress. And she does really seem to do her research, unlike some other historical costume bloggers (looking at you, Angela Clayton). Remember a couple weeks ago when I said I was worried she might unintentionally cause offence with Coven of Sisters? Well scratch that, because it's way worse than I thought it was going to be - and it was intentional.
