About this deal

It's a very simple system when you come down to it; each turn has clearly-defined steps, and the act of crossing swords is down to rolling D6 dice and comparing scores on an easy-to-read table. You don't need to worry about complex modifiers here, and even when 'Heroic' actions get thrown into the mix, they simply build on what's already there rather than making you juggle something more strenuous. This scenario is about learning how heroes and monsters work, and how they interact. The Mordor Troll goes in the centre of the board, Faramir and 6 Rangers are set up within 12”. The other models in the scenario (which are most of the rest of the contents of the box) are set aside and players roll a dice to bring on that many models from their force as reinforcements each turn.

Thundercloud: I’d add the Armies of the Lord of the Rings book straight away, and then cavalry (Gondor Knights, Warg Riders) as that is the only thing really missing from the sets. You could easily add the Mordor and Minas Tirith Battlehosts, which give you a big character, cavalry and more infantry for both factions. That's largely because the featured campaign does such a good job of drip-feeding you the game's mechanics - you'll never bite off more than you can chew. Once you've got a handle on the basics, more elements are added until you're balancing everything the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game can throw at you. It's very well done.

The last part of the Rulebook is a full gallery of all of the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit miniatures in all their studio painted glory, along with several thematic example army lists. Finally, there's the massive Fortress of Dol Guldur terrain box. I absolutely adore this box, which comes with a huge set of plastic sprues filled with walls, flooring, joints, and accessories needed to build your own crumbling fortress. There's a small guide to building a large structure included with the box, but this is really meant for modular construction. I love the look of this set, and can't wait to paint mine up once I've got it fully built the way I want it. This is the first time I've worked with a modular terrain set from Games Workshop, and I hope they follow this route going forward. You can choose to build one massive fortress, or at least five or six smaller outcroppings of ruins. It's an incredible set for serious terrain builders. These dreaded, looming ruins speak to ancient powers both evil and awesome. Image: Games Workshop What Are Our Final Thoughts On the Lord of the Rings: Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game Spring 2022 Releases? Players who simply wish to collect and paint the exceptional models that Games Workshop produce would do well to invest in a set like this if only for the sheer value for money. Likewise, anyone who is serious about setting themselves up with one or more armies in the world of Middle Earth Strategy Battle s will also feel that the best value can be found with Pelennor Fields . Personally, I think it’s also an excellent one versus one boxed game that doesn’t necessarily required expansion, having already far more in the box than the likes of Rune Wars or Star Wars: Legion . Lord of the Rings: Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game Defence of the North is a new sourcebook for the game system, and comes with a lot of resources to freshen up your game as it focuses on the Northern theater of war during both the Battle of Five Armies and the War for the Ring. The book begins with a very brief description of the events that took place in the northern lands of Middle-Earth, from the desolation of Smaug to Galadriel's destruction of Dol Guldur (and everything in between). Damrod and his Rangers ambush the Orcs. Another battle where one side has missile weapons (and in this case a hero as well, if only a minor one) and the other does not. The Orcs start in a 6” bubble in the centre of the table and the Rangers can deploy anywhere outside of that, with each Good model getting a free shot before the first turn of the game. This review was conducted with a sample provided by Games Workshop. After receiving it, I immediately set about constructing and painting its miniatures so that they could hit the tabletop as soon as possible (this included the modular ruins, whose construction was spread across multiple evenings). Along with pitting the defenders of Osgiliath against Gothmog's army, I also dug into its scenarios and pored over the rulebook to see what had changed since the last update. Many thanks to Games Workshop for providing a free early review copy of the new Battle Of Osgiliath boxed set. The new MESBG starter set is here! Following in the footsteps of the Battle of Pelennor Fields box, Osgiliath also brings a mix of old and brand new minis – now with an updated rulebook and some snazzy new terrain. Aragon at Helm’s Deep will released in November in a special scene box. All six scene cards are included with a paper easel to display them.

The Battle of Pelennor Fields box is a great starting point for this new edition of the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game. The forces included are a solid core that can be built out and we're really looking forward to what's next for the ME SBG. Fowler: I’ve found Thundercloud’s Going Beyond the Battlehosts article to be very helpful for a neophyte, especially as there is some faction overlap there! Personally, I opted for a Mordor Battleforce, Morannon command blister, and a Fell Beast – to really dive into the battle the box is named after! Battle of the Pelennor Fields scene is included in Tales of Middle-earth set, draft, and collector boosters.

The four different scenes in the scene box collections aren’t included in the main set or in set, draft, or collector boosters. The Mount Doom scene is included in the bundle and Bundle: Gift Edition boxes, as well as non-foil versions in collector boosters. This is the first scenario where a hero is introduced, and a good follow up to the first one, as Damrod is a minor hero and not going to heavily tip the game, but introduces Might and Heroic actions as a concept to the players. Whilst I am not overly familiar with the competitive scene for Middle Earth Strategy Battles , I understand that earlier versions of the rules allowed for a few slightly overpowered (and strange) possibilities. Eagles carrying hand axes (because the rules said they were equipped with one handed weapons and that meant any of the available options in that category, as long as it was glued to the model) were apparently a thing. The 2018 version of these rules that come bundled in Battle of the Pelennor Fields prevent such things, and I think it’s quite impressive that the ruleset is capable of catering for hardcore, competitive gamers and play-at-home hobbyists in equal measure.

So is this box worth it?

In this box set, you’ll find all the miniatures (no less than 84!) and rules you and an opponent will need to defend the city of Minas Tirith – or take command of the forces of Evil and wage destruction and war upon the kingdom of Gondor. Included:
