About this deal

With the upgraded Wi-model, Baratza has even changed the RPM of the motor slightly to ensure longevity. The coffee grinder has 38 grind settings, from fine for espresso to coarse for French press or cold brew. Mark Prince, aka the Coffee Geek, awarded the Sette 30 an impressive 9/10 for quality of build and performance, citing it as one of the fastest consumer grinders in the world. Is The Baratza Sette 30 A Low Retention Grinder? Sette 30 :The cheapest and most simple model of them all. It only has 30 grind settings, which makes it more challenging to adjust for the perfect espresso. However, if you’re using a lever machine or are not afraid of playing with dose and tamping pressure, this will work fine for espresso. It’s excellent for single-dosing and also has a pretty efficient time-based dosing that you can adjust down to a tenth of a second. It also has a more basic portafilter holder compared to the two other models.

Sette grinders are marketed as espresso grinders, but with enough range to take on manual brewing methods. They are more versatile than the more expensive Baratza Forte grinder. The stripped-down Sette 30 offers a budget option, with only 30 grind settings. The 270 and 270Wi both have the same inner workings, but the 270 grinds by time, whereas the Sette 270Wi grinds by weight – for which you can expect a jump in price. Nearly ten years later and the Vario is still a major player in home grinding - and Baratza continues to innovate. Today an in-depth look at their newest product the Sette 30 AP. It’s the more affordable younger brother of the Sette 270 which came out in 2016 and was awarded best new product by the specialty coffee association. Zero retention grinders are perfect for home use. In a cafe where you’re constantly grinding, any residue in the grinder is pushed through by the next batch of beans. If you’re only making coffee in the morning, you’ll end up with stale bits of coffee sitting in your grinder all day. Grind retention also means you waste coffee and can make it harder to dose correctly as your output won’t match your carefully measured input. The device also uses a DC motor with high torque that has an automatic thermal cut-off switch. Grind Settings And Quality

Low Retention Grinder

All these reasons are why Baratza Sette 270 makes the Home Grounds top coffee grinders for home use. Do Not Buy If… If you’d like to be kept up to date with new product releases and special offers, you can sign up to be first in the queue with coffee gear news here. Fluffy grinds: There is no chute – the coffee fall directly from the burrs and into your bin or portafilter. This gives you a more fluffy texture that is easier to distribute and tamp in the portafilter. There’s been some chatter here and there that the Sette grinders aren’t good for anything but espresso. I’ve heard it from cafe owners, home baristas and enthusiasts; Baratza has heard it too. I’ve talked extensively in this article about the burr geometry of the Etzinger burrs inside the Sette 30, and how the production of fines increases the coarser you go. The thing is, is that a bad thing? Device / Portafilter Holder - Naturally holds portafilter and other grind catchers with the removable / re-positionable arms.

On the other hand, this grinder can run into gearbox/motor problems even with fairly normal use. So you should probably consider twice before buying it, if you’re outside the US, where Baratza’s customer service got you covered. The design is also why the Sette is one of the grinders with the lowest retention. Having as close tozero retentionas possible is ideal when it comes to home espresso. High Speed Grinding - Revolutionary mechanics rapidly grind coffee at 3.5g/sec for espresso and 5.5g/sec for filter. This product includes: Where the Baratza 270 falls is with a coarser grind size. While you might technically be able to grind coarsely enough for French press or cold brew, you will not get the excellent grind consistency that you would with a fine grind. So how well does the Baratza Sette 30 AP fare on the grind range? The secret’s in the name – it has 30 macro grind settings allowing you to fine-tune your grind. This makes it ideally suited to home brewing with single boiler or entry-level espresso machines or for brew methods like AeroPress or pour over where micro grind size is a little less critical. How easy is the Baratza Sette 30 AP to use?

Yes, there are some variables in accuracy, but it is negligible. Hence, you don’t need to weigh coffee beans manually. On the side of the panel are three buttons for programming your favourite grind times. This handy feature on an all-purpose home burr grinder such as the Sette 270. You could save different timings for espresso, AeroPress, and batch pour-over brewing. As covered extensively in the previous section, the Sette 30 only has one grind adjustment, the same “macro” adjustment from the 270 series. So there’s not much to play with there in terms of dialing in espresso. But at least you can jump the setting up to moka, pourover, siphon, auto drip and chemex grind levels.People loved the zero retention feature, which reduces the waste of expensive beans of their specialista espresso. And, all of these features come at a reasonable price. So, it was obvious for the machine to get so hype.

The 30 AP has 30 macro grind settings. Between each macro adjustment, the 270 and 270wi have an additional nine micro-adjustments for a total of 270 different grind settings. The 270 models’ finer control allows for a much more precise brewing process. If you are interested in perfecting your espresso recipe, the additional micro settings will give you the most control. Portafilter Holder Home Grounds is a big fan of Baratza because it encourages customers to repair products rather than purchasing a whole grinder. For the most part, minor repairs can be done at home (with Baratza’s online tutorials), and replacement parts are readily available, even for discontinued models. Also, both grinder works on time grinding; to understand this, suppose you want to pull an espresso shot that requires 8 grams of ground coffee. And you should only consider the Sette 270 if you’re a true espresso lover with a high-end espresso machine & loves consistent flavors. The machine comes with 31 steps grind settings for fine to coarse grounds. But, Micro settings aren’t available with it like its older brother Baratza Sette 270. Regardless of which Baratza Sette model you choose, you can be confident that it is an excellent espresso grinder for any beginner to making espresso at home. It pairs well with any espresso machines. When you alter the macro setting between 25 and 30, the Sette can produce coarser grinds for French press or drip coffee. However, the calibration of the S1 burr (which the Sette 270 has) ensures a fine grind, so it isn’t great at the coarser grinds. However, Baratza also has an S2 brew grind burr as an accessory, which produces fewer fines and isn’t as sharp on edge. Still, if you need to get a uniform grind for other coffee brewing methods, we recommend either the Baratza Virtuoso+ or Baratza Encore. If Baratza wanted to re-engineer the Sette 30 so all it’s 30 settings fall within a turkish-to moka pot grind range (and thus give it much more fine tuning ability for espresso), they would have to re-design, re-engineer and re-manufacture a new rotating burr housing, which would have driven up the cost of the Sette 30 by a substantial amount. I also think that single-dosing is much more appealing than weight-based dosing, so again that makes it much easier to choose.
