Please be aware that the Sloth encounter takes place in enclosures which can only be accessed via steps. Habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade are two of the main reasons why the wild population is in rapid decline. Rescue and rehabilitation centres help to care for sloth who have suffered due to the pet trade or the loss of their habitat.

Your name will be added to the adoption board of honour until your Adoption expiry date. (please note this can take up to 4 weeks from the start date) They get their name from the two large claws on their forelimbs. These can grow up to 7.5cm in length. The claws have a super strong grip and some sloth have been known to remain hanging from the trees long after death! We have two sloth enclosures at the Zoo and your experience may take place in either of these depending on which sloths are available on the day. Do you know an animal aficionado who loves their sleep, hanging out in random places and is so slow that you wonder if they are moving at all? Their animal spirit must be a sloth, which just so happens to be one of the cutest animals on the planet. With this animal adoption, you are complimenting the recipient as well as giving them one of the most thoughtful gifts you can give to any animal lover.

Known for being slow movers (up to 1.6km per hour!) and taking their time, the Sloth has grown to be extremely popular with visitors to our wildlife park. As a nocturnal species the Sloth sleeps throughout the day and eats at night and can live for over 30 years! In fact, one of our very own resident sloths, Mr. Jingles, is 29 – that’s older than many of our park guests! Confucius said: 'It does not matter how slowly you go, as long as you don't stop'. This could be the mantra of the sloth. Even the word 'sloth' sounds as slow and lethargic as it's meaning doesn't it? But in reality sloths aren't lazy - just slow. And this slowness works as a very effective defence mechanism, as it's believed sloths move unnoticed by their predators! The IUCN Red List classes them as least concern. However, they do face a wide variety of risks (caused by humans), which include deforestation and death/ injury from vehicles with many major roads now passing through many parts of their range. Interesting Facts Please be aware that our sloths share their enclosures with our fruit bats, common marmosets, Saki monkeys, silvery marmosets, and golden lion tamarins - so you may also encounter them at times during your experience Your VIP Experience Sid joined us from Sandwich Wildlife Park in March 2021 after it closed, and he is an older boy who likes to take things slow… even for a sloth. Whilst Noco joined us at the end of 2022. She was born in spring 2021 at Bristol Zoo and moved to WWP after they also closed.
