Dermatology. Oxford handbook of general practice. Oxford Academic. academic.oup.com, published online June 2020 Freezing warts may also be effective. Many GPs and practice nurses are skilled at this. You can also get private treatment with cryotherapy from podiatrists. Liquid nitrogen is commonly used. The nitrogen is sprayed on or applied to the wart. Liquid nitrogen is very cold and the freezing and thawing destroys the wart tissue. To clear the wart fully it can need up to 4-6 treatment sessions, sometimes more. Each treatment session is a couple of weeks or so apart. Freezing treatment can be painful. Sometimes a small blister develops for a day or so on the nearby skin after treatment. Also, there is a slight risk of scarring the nearby skin or nail or damaging underlying tissues such as tendons or nerves. It is not suitable for younger children or for people with poor circulation. This is placed over the verruca and left for up to 6 days. Remove the tape and then soak your foot in warm water. Then scrape off any dead ski cells but do this gently. Leave the foot uncovered overnight before applying fresh duct tape the next day. Repeat this process for 1 to 2 months. Cryotherapy For genital warts, using a condom reduces the risk of transmission, but doesn't provide 100% protection as the virus may be on a part of the skin not covered by the condom. If you have a wart or verruca, taking the following measures may help to stop it spreading to other people. This is especially the case for barefoot activities surrounding swimming pools. The plantar skin on the base of the feet gets soggy and is more easily damaged. There are some other treatments used by specialists if other treatments have failed. Treatment is not usually available on the NHS to treat warts and verrucas unless there are complications or they are very severe. It is available as a private (paid for) service from many podiatrists.

Warts are not harmful, but some people find them itchy, painful or embarrassing. Verrucas are more likely to be painful – like standing on a needle. You may need to use the treatment daily for up to three months. If your wart is becoming very sore though, stop the treatment for a few days and then restart. This is a freezing process in which liquid nitrogen is sprayed onto the verruca which kills the infected skin cells. This forms a blister which then dries out and falls off. Chemical treatment There’s some evidence that cryotherapy may help to remove warts and verrucas, but it hasn’t been shown to work any better than salicylic acid treatment. Not all GP practices carry out cryotherapy. And depending on where you live, it’s not always available on the NHS for wart and verruca treatment. This means you may need to pay to have the treatment privately. There is no need to treat warts if they are not causing you any problems. Half the number of children with warts will find they have disappeared within a year without any treatment. Two-thirds will have gone within two years. Sometimes warts last longer, particularly in adults or if you have a weakened immune system (immunosuppressed), in which cases warts may persist for many years.Warts on the soles of the feet are called verrucas. They’re quite common, as nearly one in three children or young people have them. They may be painful, but usually aren't harmful and generally clear up on their own. These are small round plasters soaked in salicylic acid and are applied to the verruca. You remove and replace these on a daily basis. Soak your foot first and then scrape away any infected areas before applying the plaster. The tape should then be removed and the affected area soaked in luke-warm water and the wart pared down to remove any dead skin cells. The wart should then be left uncovered overnight and the duct tape reapplied once again in the morning. This process can be continued for up to two months.
