My one niggle is that Shiver is best brought to life by experienced players or at least a group with considerate players. I’ve fortunately not experienced the game with people who mistake it for a dungeon crawl, but I imagine that’s an easy mistake or a bad habit. I predict it would undo all that lovely tension for everyone. If you are hungry for horror and want to try new games and content as well as help shape future releases with us, then this is the perfect tier for you. Kids on Bikes who dread exploring a haunted house on Halloween night? Or perhaps a medieval monster hunter looking for a werewolf, vampire or mage? SHIVER can deliver stories and characters for anything from cult pulp classic to Cthulhu fuelled eldritch mystery.

Furthermore, enemies in Shiver are generally categorised and react to dice rolls too. While the GM/Director doesn’t lose control of NPCs or encounters, the system suggests/advises how monsters will act based on the results of these deadly dice. Indeed, instead of following the typical victim based format, you could always add in the amusing option Menzies himself took in one of his favourite moments during a playtest session.

Shiver RPG offers that exact experience of suspense, fear, and panic. Like Shiver, Enter the Survival Horror is a system that was designed to emulate multiple variations of horror. Where it differs from Shiver is that EtSH uses Forged in the Dark, taking elements of the gameplay system to create characters who are a little more resourceful than your average victim. The game begins in media res - having taken damage, the players must heal up, regroup and find a way out of their predicament. You delve through your environment, searching desperately for weapons and items you’ll need to face down all kinds of Intrusions, from traps to distractions to killers behind the closet! Each roll of the dice in Shiver is significant because there are consequences for failure. Each dice is supposed to be decorated with symbols from the game, and while there is a look-up table to translate gamer dice into Shiver dice, it’s not the same. The online dice roller is a better experience. SHIVER is perfect for creating your one shots or short stories between main campaigns. You can also create epic long stories by tying your one-shot stories together using rules for sequels. We created the gigantic gothic city of Spireholm for players to explore along with a huge interweaving narrative and mystery to be uncovered within it. Giant spire covered cathedrals, moonlit cobbled streets, and the monsters of classic novels and movies populate the city along with many other gothic inspired terrors.

The city of Spireholm is different of late. Strange folk are abroad, disappearances go unexplained, and a sombre mood descends upon the populous. A high profile murder brings an unlikely group of individuals together to investigate. What they uncover, will change them all forever.
