It has a laser cutting guide, but I don’t think it’s going to be of much use if you’ve been a hobbyist or a builder for many years. While it’s fantastic that its blade guard is transparent, it is colored so it can be hard to see your cut line while working.
The main issue with the RYOBI P553 Cordless Compound Miter Saw comes with its capacities which are some of the smallest in this Ryobi miter saw review at 2” for maximum depth and 4 ½” for maximum crosscut width. One interesting quality of this miter saw is that it tends to be much quieter than the others likely due to the cordless design. However, Ryobi started as a die-cast company which is likely why they provide superior durability compared to other consumer-grade power tool manufacturers. While they make all kinds of power tools, Ryobi pushes their cordless models more thanks to the versatility of their ONE+ lineup that allows the use of ONE+ batteries for all of their cordless power tools in the line.

The Evolution R255SMS+ is a reliable compound sliding miter saw suitable for various cutting applications. Its 10-inch blade has multi-material cutting capabilities, allowing you to work with wood, plastic, and even metal. The saw’s built-in laser guide assists in achieving precise cuts, while the sliding function enhances cutting capacity. With versatility and solid performance, the R255SMS+ is a valuable addition to any workshop. Some miter saws are now equipped with built-in laser guides for greater precision when making crosscuts. But does it really help? To some extent, yes. But it’s really something you can do without especially if you’re an experienced hobbyist or professional. I’d rather go for a sliding miter saw with an LED light, such as the Ryobi 7 1/4 Sliding Mitre Saw.

Compound – While there exists a simpler form of a miter saw, our list limits its entries to those that provide both a miter and a bevel cut. The compound miter saw is the most basic type on our list and comes with a single bevel, though this is more than sufficient for experienced users. When it comes to performance, this Delta Miter Saw truly delivered. It can cut hard MDF panels and dense hardwoods easily. It can make basic crosscuts, bevel, and miter cuts. It has a laser guide for improved accuracy, but keep in mind that this feature is powered by a pair of batteries. Crosscuts and miter cuts are a piece of cake for this tool. Unlike other miter saws, it has a dual bevel system that lets you tilt the saw left and right to make bevel cuts. It’s not a big deal for some users, but it makes the job easier as the user doesn’t have to reorient the workpiece to make another cut. Plus, its bevel angle range swings up to a maximum of 47° on both sides.

Most of the products we have reviewed here have a dual bevel. This means that you can tilt the saw left or right to cut bevels without reorienting the workpiece. This is impossible with single-bevel sliding miter saws. While this is not always the most important aspect when choosing a power saw, miter saws tend to require a bit more power than others due to the number and type of cuts they make. The saw’s lightweight and maneuverable design make it suitable for DIY enthusiasts and beginners. While it may not offer all the advanced features of high-end models, the Ryobi sliding miter saw provides good value for its price. It has a larger baseplate, making it great for cutting longer and wider pieces of lumber. It also makes cutting larger workpieces easier thanks to its adjustable base extension and taller sliding fence. Choose a fence with a cast-in scale so you can easily make repetitive cuts. Some of the products we have reviewed here have cast-in scales on sliding or stationary fences. Although it does not have cast-in scales, the Dewalt sliding miter saw stands out because of its tall sliding fences. The fences are also textured, ensuring that the workpiece sits against it securely and will not easily slip while you cut it. Miter saws with electric brakes allow you to stop the rotation of the blade several seconds after you release the power switch.
As if that were not enough, the RYOBI TSS120L Sliding Miter Saw also boasts a 13 ½” crosscut width to pair with a 3 ½” maximum cutting depth for the largest capacities reviewed. On the other hand, the corded design combined with its extremely heavyweight of 53 lbs means you will likely not be taking it anywhere. Sliding miter saw sizes are based on the diameter of the blades they carry. The most compact saws come with a 7 1/4″ blade. This is followed by 8 1/2″ blades, but these sliding miter saws are very rare. The most common sliding miter saws on the market have 10″ and 12″ blades. The Metabo HPT C12RSH2S 12″ Sliding Compound Miter Saw is another drop saw fit for professionals and serious hobbyists. As you can tell, it has a robust 12″ blade protected by a see-through blade guard. Cutting a large, wide, and tough workpiece is not going to be a problem thanks to its powerful motor. Keep in mind, while Ryobi might technically be more of a “consumer-grade” power tool manufacturer, it sits at the top of the consumer-grade with many models entering the mid-tier. That said, Ryobi is well-aware of their own quality and prices their products accordingly, though they are generally still less expensive than professional-grade brands. Buying a miter saw: features to consider But these saws can take a large chunk out of your budget. It doesn’t make sense to invest in a tool like this if you’re not going to use it frequently, and it will just sit in your workshop collecting dust. Sliding miter saws are bulky, and they’re going to take a lot of space in your garage. Some models are also very heavy, making them hard to transport.
